Overview

Custodian/Driver role at The Salvation Army USA Central Territory, Elgin Corps. This position is expected to perform custodial cleaning duties, seasonal grounds upkeep, set-up rooms for meetings, and other duties as assigned by the Corps Officer. Maintains a clean and healthy environment for employees and clients through basic janitorial services. Position is expected to comply with and meet The Salvation Army, Federal, State and Local policies, and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Custodial Duties
  • Ensure that the entire building is cleaned, including all offices and Chapel. Vacuum carpets and mop all hard floors.
  • Attend to bathrooms: replace hand towels and toilet paper, ensure liquid soap containers are refilled.
  • Attend to all countertops in bathrooms and kitchen.
  • Set up classrooms and other designated rooms for corps activities and weekly programs.
  • Periodically inspect the building to remove cobwebs and replace light bulbs as necessary.
  • Empty garbage containers from offices, kitchen, and bathrooms; dispose of garbage in the bin on the parking lot.
  • Supervise and work with Community Service workers to clean the building and prepare for programs when present.
  • Outdoor grounds keeping, parking lot, park, and yardwork.
  • Assist with unloading of food delivery for the pantry and setting up gym for food distribution.
  • Driving Duties
  • Drive the Corps van for pickup of goods, toys from sponsoring companies, keeping vehicles fueled, and other duties as assigned.
  • Report any issues with the vehicle to the Corps Officers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

This position is supervised by the Corps Officers. In contacts related to this position’s duties, the individual acts as a representative of the Army and its mission.

Performance Measurements

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

Education/Experience

  • High School education or its equivalent preferred.
  • Basic experience in maintenance and knowledge of related tools and equipment.
  • Valid Driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Clearance of TSA MVR check.

Competencies

  • Must be a self-starter and able to work unsupervised.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent safe driving skills, with ability to operate large passenger vehicles.
  • Must possess a valid IL driver’s license and clear all MVR requirements.
  • Ability to interact pleasantly with passengers and staff.
  • Ability to work quickly and with a high level of cleaning excellence.
  • Positive attitude and flexibility with changing priorities.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and serve as needed.
  • Ability to work well with staff and clients; represent The Salvation Army positively.
  • Supportive of the mission of The Salvation Army.

Position Limitations

  • Commit Army resources only as allocated or approved.
  • Keep Corps Officers informed on critical issues related to the area of responsibility.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out responsibilities.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Light to heavy physical work required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and climb a ladder.
  • Regularly required to remain stationary for periods, use hands and fingers, and operate standard maintenance equipment; may bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch as needed.
  • Office and outdoor work environments with a range of noise levels.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere and uphold the Mission of The Salvation Army with respect and dignity for all donors, contacts, and colleagues.
