Overview
The purpose of this position is to control and preserve all property accepted by or stored in the Police Department's storage areas in accordance with all statues, laws, ordinances and regulations for which the Police Department is accountable. Duties and responsibilities include overseeing the proper disposition of all items received by the property room; entering information into and updating the computer database; submitting evidence for testing; taking photographs and transporting evidence; compiling reports; and testifying in court.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Transfers evidence and property from intake room to the Police Department vault using prescribed security measures; receives and executes court orders and files record.
- Transfers drugs to lab for processing; retrieves lab reports, makes copies for concerned parties, and files.
- Arranges for owners to claim property as needed.
- Researches evidence case numbers for attorneys, judges' assistants, officers, detectives and the public; answers questions on evidence and/or signs out evidence to proper authorities; updates evidence file.
- Prepares articles and packages for mailing; arranges for certified mail and transports to post office; attaches receipt when returned and holds item in proper storage area; picks up evidence from state police lab as required.
- Answers subpoenas for testimony in court bringing evidence applicable to case.
- Cleans and maintains areas of intake room, custodian office, vault and bulk storage.
- Compares found property items with stolen property reports, particularly bicycles; contacts owners and/or transports articles to regular/bulk storage.
- Prints and distributes officers' property sheets quarterly for disposition; processes returned sheets according to officers' input as to destroy, return or hold property. Sets up destruction date for weapons and drugs; prepares monthly activity sheet and maintains year-to-date totals; files evidence property cards; updates evidence file with investigator assigned to case; maintains division filing system.
- Assists with annual budget for Evidence Division; orders supplies for evidence packaging for the Police Department.
- Instructs new officers during the Field Training Program on proper departmental procedures for submitting evidence.
- Attends shift meetings, seminars and training sessions as required to stay current with departmental operations, to promote improved job performance and to remain knowledgeable of changing state/municipal codes and criminal/civil case law.
- Preserve property and evidence from cross contamination, theft or loss
- Document all movement of items in the evidence management system; chain of custody
- Ensure all releases and dispositions of property and evidence are authorized and accurately documented
- Inventory property and evidence following policy requirements of the department.
- Order and maintain availability of packing supplies.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High School diploma or GED required (Vocational/technical school diploma preferred), with two years of security, administrative, police/law enforcement experience or related. Must possess a valid Kentucky driver's license.
Salary and Work Hours
Salary: Pay Grade: GS; $47,194/yr. ($22.68/hr.); plus full benefit package
Work Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
