Position Summary

DEFINITION: Under supervision of the appropriate supervisor in the Facilities department on the assigned shift, this position performs routine cleaning work in assigned areas; participates in the setups of events; moves furniture, as needed, for office and classroom reconfiguration; and promotes the mission and vision of the college.

Essential Functions and Qualifications

  1. Participates in deep cleaning assignments of college facilities during recess/vacation periods or when assigned.
  2. Perform all phases of custodial work as assigned, including pressure washing walls and sidewalks.
  3. Operate and maintain custodial equipment safely and efficiently.
  4. Restock paper towel holders, soap dispensers, toilet paper holders, towel racks and similar dispensers in restrooms, locker rooms and laboratories, and request supplies as needed.
  5. Remove and replace lamps and report lighting fixtures requiring additional work to supervisor so a work order can be drafted; clean and make minor repairs to custodial equipment; perform minor non-technical repairs to keep areas safe and operating, including adjusting shades, blinds, furniture, tightening toilet seats, and adjusting shelves on bookcases.
  6. Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment, and setting up buildings and rooms for events, including stage and gymnasium setups.
  7. Lock or unlock classrooms, restrooms, and other designated buildings or areas as assigned. When leaving areas, secure doors, gates, windows and buildings; turn off unnecessary lights; ensure buildings are secured.
  8. Report safety concerns, vandalism, graffiti, sanitary fire hazards or security violations.
  9. Inspect fire extinguishers and emergency lights on a monthly basis and report findings to supervisor.
  10. Load a truck; drive a light truck and other district vehicles to deliver or pick up equipment, furniture, and supplies; operate a forklift.
  11. Train and oversee assigned student helpers and substitutes.
  12. Attend and participate in shift meetings.
  13. Keep up to date with SIPE online safety training and attend other training relevant to the custodial position.
  14. Perform routine and preventative maintenance on custodial equipment.
  15. Basic computer skills to access emails, work orders, and safety training modules.
  16. Perform other related work as assigned.

Knowledge of

  • Modern cleaning methods;
  • Safe work practices related to custodial care;
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS) purpose;
  • Cleaning chemicals and their purpose;
  • Planning and organization.

Demonstrates ability to

  • Learn and follow established cleaning methods and schedules;
  • Use cleaning materials and equipment efficiently and safely;
  • Make minor non-technical repairs;
  • Work independently, as well as with students, staff and faculty;
  • Oversee, train and direct substitutes and student workers assigned to work with them;
  • Cooperatively work with custodial and other Facilities staff;
  • Drive work truck and other vehicles required in the performance of custodial duties;
  • Understand and carry out simple oral and written directions.

Working Conditions

  • Duties are primarily performed on campus and other off-campus sites.
  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors.
  • Duties may be performed during inclement weather.
  • Work requires standing and walking for prolonged periods.
  • The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
  • The incumbent will have contact, in person or on the telephone, with executive, management, supervisory, academic and classified staff and the general public.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift, carry, and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds;
  • Handle equipment, and operate machinery necessary to perform job duties;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel;
  • Reach in all directions;
  • Frequent, pushing and/or pulling of objects weighing up to 120 pounds with occasional heavy work;
  • Handle equipment; hand truck (dollies), pallet jacks;
  • Work at heights; ascend and descend ladders, and work in multi-level buildings.

Special Qualification

Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Individuals possessing the knowledge and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education and experience.

Licenses and certificates required:

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License
  • Forklift certification within one year of employment

Additional Information

The desired start date is November 2025. This is a full-time, 37-hour, classified, 12-month position.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m. and Friday, 6:00 p.m. - 1:30 a.m.

Eligible for five percent (5%) shift differential
