Position Overview
The Project Field Welding Engineer supports the implementation of the welding program at Aecon project sites and is a project technical expert for all welding-related codes and technical issues. Must be able to secure unescorted access authorization to the plant site. The position may be dayshift or nightshift depending on project needs and schedule and may require travel to/from the home office and remote work supporting supplier fabrication activities.

What You'll Do Here
- Ensures the proper implementation and maintenance of the corporate or site Welding and QA Program
- Supports the Welding Program Manager with the execution of all project welding activities in accordance with the Company welding program manual, regulatory, code and contract requirements.
- Review contract and design specifications to develop project welding requirements (Project Technical Welding Requirements Document). Supports constructability evaluations during the project design phase.
- Provides support to discipline work planners/field engineers (piping, component, structural, etc.) with the development of Welding Documentation (Weld Records and Weld Maps) for their respective construction work packages.
- Issues, and controls Welding Procedures, Welding Specifications, Process Control Documents, and all other technical welding documents.
- Supports the implementation of Welding Program Management software at project site and in coordination with corporate offices.
- Travel to suppliers and vendors for support of welding program activities, assisting vendors in welding related fabrication and technical issues, welding personnel qualification assistance, WPS qualification and documentation requirements.
- Facilitates availability of welding documentation and technical support to the Project Manager and Superintendents for execution of field welding operations.
- Directs and implements the project welder qualification program and welder status program, including witnessing and supervision of the weld test shop for welders and welding operator performance qualification testing.
- Oversee the weld material issue program and provides consultation, technical responses, and support for welding related questions and issues presented by regulatory bodies, clients, and internal staff.
- Sets day-to-day direction for welding engineers (when assigned) to support project goals.
- Implements and supports the project welding documentation database and issues weekly project welding status reports.
- May be assigned to perform other mechanical and piping field engineering functions, such as material inventory control activities, work package/datasheet reviews and similar activities as needed to support the resource needs/schedule of the assigned project.
What You Bring To The Team
- Minimum of a two-year associates’ degree from an accredited college in Welding, Engineering, Materials Science, Welding Engineering Technology, or other applicable technology program and 5–15 years’ experience in a welding engineering related position.
- A four-year technical degree in a welding-related field with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the nuclear power generation or federal nuclear industry is also acceptable.
- Experience working with ASME Section IX, and one or more of the following ASME Sections: I, II, VIII, B31.1, and/or AWS D1.1.
- Experience with development and qualification of Welding Procedures to meet design, construction, and regulatory requirements for power plant applications.
- Experience with evaluation and resolution development of welding-related project and code issues.
- Development of project welding requirements and plans.
- Experience testing welders, supervising weld test shops, and performing destructive and non-destructive testing of welder performance qualification test coupons.
- Familiarity with weld filler material purchase requisition, review and use of filler material purchase specifications, procurement of welding filler materials and management of welding filler material issue stations.
- Familiarity with preparation review and approval of welder performance qualification records and continuity records.
- Ability to train other project personnel within a formal setting regarding welding program procedures, processes and requirements.
- Familiarity with post weld heat treatment processes and procedures and nondestructive examination processes and procedures.
- Demonstrated past competence in generating or providing technical input to welding-related subcontracts for specialty services (e.g., welding machine rentals, NDE subcontracts, PWHT subcontracts, machining subcontracts, etc.).
Other Job Requirements
- Must be able to secure unescorted access authorization to plant site.
- Must be able to physically perform the job duties, including walking, climbing stairs/ladders, wearing fall protection, climbing scaffolds, entering confined spaces, and lifting up to 25 lbs. with proper PPE.
- Must be able to effectively utilize all computer software required for the position, including welding management software for welding documentation purposes. This position requires prior or current nuclear power plant welding program and electronic welding management software implementation experience.
- Position requires a high level of AWS and ASME welding knowledge.
Preferred Additional Qualifications
- Experience with machine GTAW welding processes and equipment.
- Knowledge and experience with advanced machine welding systems and processes.
- Knowledge and experience with field machining and/or precision measurements for the installation of piping and equipment.
- In-depth experience related to implementation and use of electronic welding management system.
- Participation or membership of an ASME or AWS committee, sub-committee, or working group.
- Ability to interface directly with client regarding welding program quality issues, concerns, regulatory compliance, and welding technical issues.
- Past experience performing troubleshooting and providing resolution to welding technical issues.
- Non-destructive examination experience or day-to-day interaction with NDE processes or subcontractors.
