We are seeking a Weld Engineer to lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of Scot Forge weld and additive manufacturing systems for our Defense and Nuclear markets. This role balances technical aptitude with strong problem-solving skills and provides hands-on shop support while collaborating at all levels of the organization. This role is responsible for technology, people, and process qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and own the welding program (AWS, ASME and others) and collaborate with quality on system enhancements required for certification.
  • Lead or assist in the development of welding and additive manufacturing automation systems.
  • Provide on-the-floor support to welders and other engineering team members in executing welding and additive processes and products.
  • Work closely with the non-destructive testing team in developing and sustaining a weld inspection program.
  • Develop, write, and ensure effective execution of manufacturing procedures including welding and additive manufacturing procedures.
  • Develop and submit customer-facing work procedures for new and repaired products.
  • Collaborate with the materials lab to review process and welder qualification samples, adjusting practices and coaching to ensure sustainable quality performance.
  • Interpret industry and customer specifications and communicate requirements.
  • Educate office and shop employees on welding concepts and practices.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems using a scientific approach.
  • Provide technical disposition of welding quality rejections and own corrective actions for system failures.
  • Conduct research and development projects for process improvement and product development; work with cross-functional teams to develop new customers, product types, and market segments.
  • Serve as a technology subject matter expert in welding and additive manufacturing through industry research.
  • Perform failure analysis and disposition of internally and externally rejected forgings/welds and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide supplier qualification and oversight when appropriate.
  • Represent Scot Forge in industry organizations as requested (e.g., AWS, ASME, ASNT).

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Weld Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or Material Science (emphasis on weld processes) desired, but comparable industry experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a weld engineer or applicable additive manufacturing research.

Required Skills

  • Experience in building and maintaining a certified weld program.
  • Intermediate understanding of physical metallurgy principles as they relate to welding, metalworking, and heat treatment applications.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Technical skills include: Weld Engineering, Physical Metallurgy, Heat treatment Principles, Mechanical Testing, Failure Analysis, NDE, Industry and Customer Specifications.
  • Exposure to automation and/or additive manufacturing processes.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

Position requires a mix of office work and occasional work in production areas where forklifts, cranes, and related equipment are in use. You may be exposed to heat, cold, wet or humid conditions; appropriate PPE is mandatory when in production areas.

  • Manufacturing Shop Floor – 50-60%
  • Metallurgy Laboratory – 5-10% (running lab equipment)
  • Office – 20-30%
  • Lift up to 65 lb
  • 5-10% overnight travel
