Job Description

USC Athletics is hiring an Assistant Director of Sports Brands & Communications to join the staff and student community. This role is responsible for all content related to designated sports to elevate and promote the USC Athletics brand. Primary duties include serving as the primary contact with local and national media for designated sports and handling public relations and sports information efforts. The role also includes brainstorming, pitching, and creating content for USC Athletics website and social media in collaboration with external units.

Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Brands & Communications, the role works with various athletics department offices (creative, marketing, game operations, academics, etc.). The ideal candidate will be proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign and Photoshop), with strong communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Knowledge of higher education and understanding of college athletes are preferred.

This non-exempt position serves a large student/staff population and requires commitment to improving outcomes for diverse populations. USC Athletics supports non-discrimination and equal opportunity.

This position is primarily in-office with some remote work as agreed with the supervisor. Night and weekend work, and travel, may be required for designated sports.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all public relations efforts for designated sports, including media relations and communications strategy.
  • Schedule and execute weekly cross-department meetings to meet strategic communication needs for designated sports.
  • Manage and create content for multiple platforms with the help of creative staff (social media, website, etc.).
  • Maintain statistics and rosters for designated sports at home events and on the road; write press releases, game recaps, and feature stories; update bios and schedules on the designated sports’ pages.
  • Cover events at home and away venues as needed; maintain accurate records for designated sports.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. USC reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of work experience; two years preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop), and sport-specific stats software (e.g., NLS Stats).
  • Experience in higher education and/or sports-related fields is ideal.
  • Demonstrated commitment to USC’s Unifying Values through ideas, words, and actions.

Hourly Range

Hourly range: $34.08 – $40.00. USC considers factors such as responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market conditions when making offers.

Minimum Education & Experience
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree; Combined experience/education may substitute for minimum education. Minimum Experience: 1 year. Minimum Field of Expertise: Experience with writing, editing, proofreading, and preparing materials for publication; working knowledge of desktop publishing, word processing, graphics, design, and printing.
