Location: Environmental Management Services Division, Birmingham, AL Medical Center. The position is under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee and performs janitorial and custodial services at the VA Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
Duties
- Perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties to keep patient areas clean and safe.
- Address spills quickly, discard trash, install light bulbs in halls and rooms, vacuum and polish floors.
- Clean wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas.
- Sweep, mop, scrub floors (machine), vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings (may require small ladders).
- Refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers and move furniture as needed. Carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
Work Schedule: Tours of duty are 7:00 am–3:30 pm and evening shift 3:30 pm–12:00 am. Schedule is subject to change based on agency need.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position requires continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. Occasional use of heavy cleaning equipment (over 50 pounds) may be required. Requires dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual acuity for cleaning tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Indoor work with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some outdoor work in varying weather. PPE may be required due to exposure to contagious diseases, blood, and bodily fluids. Use of ladders and power equipment and handling hazardous materials requires caution to prevent injuries.
