Position Summary

The position of Maintenance Technician is a hands-on role that provides technical expertise and participates in the maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance of facility equipment to reduce downtime and increase operational efficiency in a validated, cGMP environment. This includes machinery, buildings, computer systems, control systems, safety and security systems. The role also includes maintaining shop tools, inventory, and keeping the department’s CMMS updated, while adhering to Lean and 5S principles. The position may support after-hours emergency response on an as-needed basis and may assist with developing and maintaining parts inventory systems. Depending on modality (e.g., Gamma), this is a physical role requiring strength and endurance. This is a 3rd shift position with hours Sunday – Thursday, 11:00pm – 7:30am.

What You’ll Do as a Maintenance Technician

  • Perform technical troubleshooting on a variety of modalities, technologies, and locations. Conduct regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on high-volume, validated processing equipment. Review maintenance tasks for effectiveness and frequency and recommend continuous improvement or Lean changes for management implementation.
  • Optimize processing and reduce downtime by performing predictive and preventive maintenance on all equipment, machinery, and facility buildings; participate in installation of new equipment as required; maintain electrical systems including facility lighting by installing and repairing wiring and fixtures; perform general maintenance tasks including landscaping, painting, and carpentry.
  • Contribute to a safe, secure, and clean workplace by conducting safety/maintenance inspections (daily, weekly, quarterly, semi-annual) per guidelines; complete related paperwork to GMP standards; adhere to safety procedures including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), SDS, and environmental requirements for waste and disposal.
  • Support production efficiency by completing shift work promptly and responding to off-shift maintenance calls on a 24-hour rotating on-call schedule; maintain a spare parts program and repair or defer action for supervisor decision as needed.
  • Maintain building climate by installing, repairing, servicing, or performing preventative maintenance on HVAC systems.
  • Pursue continuous improvement by analyzing new or alternative ways to improve operations, monitor production efficiency, incorporate staff recommendations, respond to audit findings constructively, and implement improvements where possible.
  • Continuously maintain mechanical and technical skills by attending workshops, reviewing trade publications, participating in training, and training others to conduct minor repairs; complete necessary certification and re-certification requirements.
  • Contribute to a team by adhering to STERIS policies, GMP, Lean principles, and other directives; support higher-level management decisions and perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Skills, and Abilities Needed

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in maintenance systems, mechanical processes, and production output in a manufacturing/industrial/military environment
  • Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate in English
  • Ability to work independently under general guidelines
  • Computer literacy (word processing, spreadsheets, email, calendar, virtual platforms, CMMS, and related software)
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Average organizational, analytical, and minimum Level 2 math skills for problem solving and corrective action plans
  • May require PLC/control experience
  • Adaptability to changing duties and responsibilities
  • Working knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanics or electrical applications
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Normal hearing range to hear alarms and related signals

Preferred

  • Support Lean practices and principles

Other

  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including physical capacity evaluation and annual physical as appropriate
  • Ability to complete Operator training to become certified Operator and pass re-certification annually
  • If required by modality, subject to NRC-required background check

Pay Information

Pay range for this opportunity is $25/hr - $30/hr. Minimum pay offers comply with county/city minimums if higher than the listed range. Pay rates are based on factors including local labor market costs, relevant experience, education, certifications, language, etc.
