JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Lead the instruction of participants, effectively supervise, and motivate class participants to reach their individual goals.
  2. Maintain a working knowledge of swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards and demonstrate these skills effectively.
  3. Instruct and evaluate swim lesson participants following YMCA guidelines, and prepare lesson plans accordingly.
  4. Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents.
  5. Convey information about aquatics programs and schedules as appropriate.
  6. Submit completed records on time (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
  7. Organize and store class equipment properly; report any facility or equipment irregularities to the supervisor in writing.
  8. Ensure the safety of participants at all times.
  9. Follow and enforce all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety protocols.
  10. Be knowledgeable and prepared to implement emergency procedures.
  11. Report all incidents/accidents using the appropriate form and submit to the supervisor within 24 hours.
  12. Work scheduled hours, including starting and ending classes on time, staying after class to answer questions, and cleaning up supplies.
  13. Attend all required training sessions and scheduled meetings.
  14. Support the Strong Community Campaign fundraising efforts.
  15. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  1. Minimum age 18
  2. At least 2 years of experience teaching the sport

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  1. Ability to perform physical activities such as climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing for extended periods, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 35 pounds, and communicating verbally.
  2. Demonstrate maturity, patience, dependability, and a desire to work with all ages, especially children.
  3. Visual acuity to see all sections of an assigned zone or area.
  4. Ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  5. Maintain alertness and concentration for long periods to ensure participant safety.
  6. Make independent, sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
  7. Show initiative in the absence of supervision.
  8. Relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
  9. Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

Job Requirements:

  1. Commitment to the YMCA mission, vision, and values.
  2. Attend New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire.
  3. Complete BLS/AED, First Aid, O2, and YSL training in accordance with Conditions of Employment.
  4. Understand and abide by all policies and procedures set by the association.
  5. Work a schedule that reflects the needs of the branch.
