The Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) is responsible for providing professional substance use disorder counseling services to individuals, families, and groups. The LAC will conduct assessments, develop treatment plans, and implement evidence-based interventions to support recovery and overall well-being. The counselor will also work collaboratively with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive and integrated patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct comprehensive assessments and evaluations of clients with substance use disorders.

Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on clinical needs and patient goals.

Provide individual, group, and family counseling using evidence-based practices.

Educate clients and families on substance use disorders, coping strategies, and available resources.

Coordinate care with medical and behavioral health professionals to support holistic treatment approaches.

Maintain accurate and confidential client records in compliance with federal and state regulations.

Assist clients in developing relapse prevention strategies and long-term recovery plans.

Facilitate crisis intervention services when necessary.

Advocate for clients and connect them with appropriate community resources and support groups.

Stay current on best practices, licensing requirements, and continuing education in addiction counseling.

Participate in team meetings, case consultations, and training sessions as required.

Apply current ASAM criteria for appropriate level of care referrals and treatment

May be asked to perform other duties that align with NHC’s mission, including but not limited to participation on clinical committees, providing education, quality review and/or other activities.

Position Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of addiction treatment modalities and behavioral health interventions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards in client care.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle crisis situations professionally.
  • Commitment to cultural competence and working with diverse populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain a non-judgmental and supportive approach to clients.
  • Ability to utilize electronic health record and general Microsoft office applications

Education & Experience:

  • • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
  • • Minimum of 2 years of experience in addiction counseling preferred.

Licensure & Certification:

  • • Active Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) certification in North Dakota.
  • • Additional certifications such as Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor (LCAC) or Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) are preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements :

  • • Office and clinical settings with occasional community outreach.
  • • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required based on client needs.
  • • Ability to sit, stand, and use a computer for extended periods.
