Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Fitness Manager, this position is responsible for the overall coordination and management of comprehensive fitness and wellness programs. The Fitness Coordinator leads the day-to-day management and operations of group fitness, personal training and wellness services, and performs duties in a manner consistent with the organization’s values.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities
- Oversee all fitness and wellness programs at the assigned facility and satellite locations, including group fitness, personal training, insurance benefit programs (e.g., SilverSneakers, Renew Active/One Pass, Silver & Fit), specialty classes, special events and wellness services.
- Hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations and address deficiencies.
- Determine staffing needs, create schedules, provide backup support, review and approve biweekly timesheets; coordinate with Payroll to resolve pay issues.
- Collaborate with District staff to ensure a positive program experience, including facility scheduling, maintenance, collaborative programs and registration processes.
- Enforce risk management standards through training, procedures and regular review; ensure equipment layouts and storage meet standards.
- Purchase and maintain inventory of program equipment.
- Assist with budget preparation and monitoring; manage revenues and expenditures; prepare financial reports; issue purchase orders, RFPs and invoice requests; collect and record payments; develop revenue/expenditure projections; review revenue streams via POS; develop program-related costs, fees and locations.
- Assist with development, implementation and tracking of marketing strategies; promote programs; evaluate customer satisfaction; solicit sponsors and donations as assigned.
- Maintain records and periodic reports (attendance, program, staff evaluations, incident/accident, insurance utilization, inventory, maintenance) per District procedures.
- Provide general information to the public regarding parks and recreation operations and programs.
- Respond to emergencies with appropriate first aid as needed; communicate with the public in a professional, respectful and timely manner in line with District policies.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with District employees, vendors and user groups; foster a welcoming and responsive culture.
- Lead fitness programs/classes as needed and assist with District and community-wide events.
- Attend professional meetings, staff meetings and training; stay current on trends in recreational services and health/wellness.
- Commit to regular, reliable, punctual attendance; may work evenings, weekends and some holidays.
- Assist with policy enforcement and development of procedures; conduct informational meetings and respond to questions or concerns.
- Assess community needs by evaluating programs and activities; recommend improvements and implement changes; ensure public safety and inspect facilities for safety and maintenance.
Education, Experience and Licenses
- Associate’s Degree in Exercise Science, Health Education, Adult Fitness, Physical Education, or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Two (2) years of experience in fitness and wellness required.
- One (1) year of recreation program management experience preferred; supervisory experience preferred.
- Nationally accredited Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor certifications required.
- CPR/AED/First Aid certification required; in-person skills component required (online-only not accepted).
- Valid Colorado Driver License or ability to obtain upon hire and maintain acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of recreation/facility management, fitness programming, safety and emergency procedures, and customer service principles.
- Ability to supervise and evaluate staff; recruit, train and motivate employees; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Publisher) and ability to manage budgets and records.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with attention to accuracy and timeliness.
- Ability to work varied schedules including evenings, weekends and holidays; ability to organize groups in a recreation setting.
Physical Requirements and Working Environment
- Stand, walk, and sit for extended periods; lift up to 50 pounds; may lead fitness programs/classes.
- Regularly uses office and fitness equipment; may drive a District vehicle to facilities.
- Primarily works in a recreation center and office; occasional outdoor work in variable weather.
