Job Summary: We are seeking a passionate, reliable, and certified Group Fitness Instructor to lead engaging and safe classes in disciplines such as cardio, strength training, Yoga, Tai Chi, or other mind-body wellness practices. The ideal candidate will inspire participants of all fitness levels, foster a welcoming environment, and support individuals in achieving their health and wellness goals. The Fitness Instructor is responsible for conducting safe and effective group exercise classes for the patrons of the Park District of Franklin Park.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be certified in group fitness, personal training, Yoga, Tai Chi, or another mind-body discipline. Must have experience leading group fitness classes and working with a variety of ages and physical fitness levels. Candidates must be able to modify exercises for individuals with limited mobility, chronic conditions, or balance issues. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- General Duties
- Lead effective and engaging adult group fitness classes. Provide clear instructions and demonstrations to accommodate all levels
- Foster a positive, encouraging atmosphere that supports physical, emotional, and social wellness
- Ensure the safety of all participants and guide proper form and breathing
- Arrive on time and prepare the space/equipment as needed before each session
- Communicate respectfully and empathetically with patrons and staff
- Track attendance and notify the supervisor of any participants not on the roster
- Stay informed on best practices for senior fitness and the aging population
- Make any necessary adjustments to exercises to ensure a safe and effective class
- Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, and participants immediately
- Contact and ask for assistance from a supervisor or other Park District staff when necessary
- Communicate any program/patron concerns, questions, or changes to your supervisor as soon as possible. If there is an immediate concern, notify the Facility Attendant on duty (in the absence of the supervisor)
- Report maintenance needs to supervisor; follow-up on status with supervisor and/or maintenance supervisor
- Complete accident and incident reports and report any issues to the supervisor
- Safety, Health, and Loss Control
- Minimize the risk of injury to participants and the facility
- Modify exercises to ensure safety for all participants
- Certified in first aid, CPR/AED use, and prepared to act as a first responder in case of emergency
- Be familiar with and able to facilitate emergency action plans
- Be familiar with the Personnel and Employee Safety Manual
- Inspect equipment and mitigate any hazards in the room. Report hazards to your supervisor and facility attendant on duty
- Be familiar with the safe operation of any equipment used during class
- Complete Accident/Incident Reports for any injury or illness that may occur during fitness class
- Comply with all relevant industry safety standards and regulations

- Physiological Considerations
- Frequently standing, jumping, squatting, lunging, walking, jogging, lifting, stretching, and balancing
- Occasionally sitting, kneeling, crawling
- Work requires repetitive movements and might require the use of strength training equipment. May also require handling an average weight (up to 30lbs) of materials or equipment. Must be able to lift up to 30lbs
- Environmental Considerations
- Activities performed primarily indoors, however, may be outdoors
- Exposure to various temperatures while indoors or outdoors
- Exposure to inclement weather while indoors or outdoors
- Exposure to moderate-level noise commonly encountered in group fitness classes

- Be able to lift 30 lbs. Encouraged to use mechanical or manual assistance for lifting over 30 lbs
- Must possess or be willing to obtain within six months of employment, certifications in First Aid and CPR training
- Group fitness or other certification in class discipline required
- A pre-employment criminal background check is required
Working Hours
This position is part-time, and hours will vary depending on facility and instructor availability. Looking to fill evening and morning time slots.
