Responsible for instructing safe, effective group fitness classes. Group fitness classes may include Yoga, Kettlebell, HIIT, Cardio Kickboxing, Water Aerobics, Zumba or Silver Sneakers.
Position Description
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform each essential duty satisfactorily and demonstrate the following competencies. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. - Possess and maintain national group fitness certification, such as ACE, AFAA or NDEITA.
- Minimum of one year of experience in group fitness instruction preferred.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Possess and maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certifications or obtain within three months of employment.
- Have good organizational, interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrate proper exercise and cueing techniques; create choreography for multi-level fitness classes that challenge beginners through advanced exercisers and provide modifications as needed; build patterns logically and create smooth transitions.
- Arrive on time (min. 5 minutes early) for respective shifts to ensure that class begins on time.
- Follow instructor procedures to verify participants and track attendance.
- Communicate effectively with participants, other staff and supervisor.
- Promote other classes and make necessary announcements.
- Make sure equipment is put away in its proper storage area after each class.
- Provide high quality of customer service in a professional manner when interacting with patrons, program participants and other staff.
- Maintain good safety awareness and follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
- Follow all Byron Park District policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Wear appropriate attire for the class you are instructing.
- Attend meetings and in-service trainings as required.
- Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position must be able to frequently move about the fitness/aerobics room and demonstrate exercises. Occasionally this position may need to move items weighing up to 25 lbs.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
This position will primarily work indoors and may be exposed to dust, odors, cleaning chemicals and varying degrees of temperature and light. This position needs to be aware of hazardous situations which could cause a safety concern for participants, which could include but not limited to: water on the floor, sticky floors due to humidity, items in the fitness area, tripping hazards, etc. The noise level of the environment is moderate.
OTHER DEMANDS
This position must have good problem solving skills, be flexible and use good judgment. This position must be able to follow directions, respond calmly to emergencies and work with minimal supervision. This position may feel stress while trying to motivate clients.
