Overview
City of Aurora, Colorado is seeking a Yoga Instructor to join our recreation division. The role involves designing and delivering group fitness classes, adapting to diverse levels and needs, and contributing to ongoing program development. Primary duties include choreography and planning of classes, developing programs for various levels, clear and safe instruction, and maintaining a positive, engaging class environment.
Hiring Salary: $22.00/hour. This is a VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee) position working less than 29 hours per week. The position does not provide medical benefits but accrues sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Choreography/planning of exercise classes
- Develop exercise programs designed for a variety of levels in small and/or large group settings
- Maintain effective communication during class with participants using verbal cues and guidance
- Set up equipment and music prior to class and breakdown/clean after class
- Keep up with new fitness trends to implement in classes/programs
- Modify exercise plans based on needs, potential injuries, or health issues
- Oversee the use of fitness equipment to ensure safe and proper exercise
- Provide motivation to participants
- Substitute yoga classes at various centers; assist with outdoor sessions and special events (e.g., Sunset Yoga, Solstice Yoga)
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions
Education: High School Diploma; degree in Kinesiology or Sports Science preferred
Experience: At least 1 year of experience teaching fitness classes or personal training
Knowledge: Knowledge of diverse exercises and how to adjust plans for each client’s needs; ability to instruct and motivate people
Abilities: Instruct and motivate group fitness participants; maintain a safe environment; excellent communication skills; teamwork
Licenses & Certifications Required: Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor from an accredited institution; CPR/AED certification
Working Conditions
- Essential Personnel: May be required to work during emergencies as declared by the City
- Physical Demands: Medium work; frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing; may involve bending and stooping
- Work Environment: Works primarily indoors; may work outdoors for programs or outreach events in varying weather
- Equipment Used: Standard office equipment and fitness equipment knowledge
