Overview

The Dean is responsible for all Business, Transfer, and Service Careers areas of instruction and provides leadership, planning, development, and management of academic programming for credit learning in the assigned areas. The specific programs include Business, Associate in Arts, Associate in General Education, Associate in Science, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Human Services, and Information Technology. Working in collaboration with the VP of Academic and Student Success, Dean of CTE and Health Sciences, Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management and Dean of Student Engagement and Support, and other leaders, the Dean is responsible for ensuring that the college’s strategic plan as it relates to assigned instructional areas are implemented appropriately; fosters quality teaching and learning; and develops and manages budgets supporting all functions of assigned academic departments. The Dean of Business, Transfer, and Service Careers works with the internal divisional leadership team and area faculty to develop seamless credit curricular pathways to support successful student outcomes. The Dean is charged with ensuring that assigned academic departments personnel engage in professional learning and development that leads to individual and instructional excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee implementation procedures pertaining to Business, Transfer, and Service Careers instructional programs and related policies.
  • Recommend to the Vice President of Academic & Student Success personnel to teach in curriculum programs along with recommendations for salary adjustments, educational leave requests, etc.; Recommend to the Vice President of Academic & Student Success.
  • Approve requests for travel, personal and sick leave, textbook adoptions and revision, requisitions, purchase orders for instructional programs and Faculty Update funds.
  • Assist other administrative officers of the College in the formulation of general College policies and procedures.
  • Recommend the Academic Affairs budget to the Vice President of Academic & Student Success: maintains a coordinating relationship between all areas of Academic Success and the fiscal division of the College; cooperates with the Vice President of Academic and Student Success in the development and implementation of the College’s budget.
  • Participate in developing future plans for the institution; responsible for interpreting data and evaluating needs for new programs and status of current programs.
  • Attend professional seminars and workshops related to resource development, marketing, public relations, management and supervision, organizational communication, and other areas.
  • Ensure that all stakeholders in the College are treated fairly and well, having experienced the highest in customer service.
  • Serve on various College committees; serve as a representative of the College for special events; participate in College events and activities.
  • Schedule monthly meetings with the faculty, and weekly ones with the Vice President of Academic & Student Success.
  • Attend Divisional Leadership Team meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job description.
  • And other duties assigned by the VP of Academic and Student Success.

Qualifications

  1. Earned graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Previous faculty experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of senior-level leadership and management experience, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and accomplishments in the areas of academic success, and collaborations with student success, workforce development and other key administrative areas.
  • Collaborative and visionary leadership skills with the ability to encourage improvement, inspire their colleagues, and promote dedication, creativity, innovation, and growth; demonstrated effectiveness as a change agent/transformational leader
  • Positive engagement with all staff and the community at large, to include an understanding that instructional and student support areas are stronger when integrated in their purpose and mission
  • Commitment to and understanding of the continued creation and utilization of a culture of evidence in decision-making as articulated in the College’s Strategic Plan; experience linking resources to planning, with appreciation for data analytics and using data to assist with decision-making
  • Knowledge of enrollment management issues and operations, and commitment to student success; experience developing programs for non-traditional students and in online and hybrid program delivery; a focus on the design and implementation of Pathways to support students’ goals and achievements
  • Commitment to fostering teaching excellence, encouraging innovation and experimentation in pedagogy and course design and delivery
  • Collegial team orientation, including encouraging deep alignment, integration and collaboration between and among Student Success; Administrative Services; Institutional Effectiveness & Research; and the office of the Vice President of Academic &Student Success
  • Understanding of demographics affecting higher education and ability to articulate challenges and opportunities before the community college; understanding of traditionally under-served and at-risk student populations
  • Knowledge of instructional pedagogies, learning styles, current research and technologies for enhancement of teaching and learning
  • Commitment to institutional, state, and national research regarding student success; understanding of current higher education issues, trends and future conversations
  • Ability to think strategically and prioritize effectively; ability to make difficult decisions in a timely, thoughtful, evidence-based manner
