Overview
The Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) is responsible for the care of residents in a designated area of the facility. CNAs are knowledgeable of the information outlined on the interdisciplinary Care Plan and follow the plan. They provide information to keep the care plan current with the resident's needs, provide restorative care, help keep residents well-groomed and clean, and assist to meet psychosocial needs. They keep resident care areas clean and in good working order, fostering a home-like atmosphere. CNAs communicate with Licensed Staff and other department heads regarding residents' needs, report observations in a timely manner, document information on the Nursing Flow Record and other records, attend in-services and staff meetings, and are responsible to the Licensed Staff assigned to the unit.
Education and Qualifications
Must be able to read, write, and follow oral instructions. High school education or equivalent is preferred. Must be at least enrolled in a certification program before employment begins, and completion of the certification process is preferred prior to employment. Certification must be completed within state-designated deadlines. Must have and maintain a CNA certification. Must maintain background checks in good standing according to the requirements of the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services (DADS).
Responsibilities
- Sign in on Unit Assignment Sheet and review changes on Group Assignment Sheets; receive reports from Licensed Staff updating the Group Assignment Sheet as indicated.
- Check residents and make rounds on the assigned group, noting significant issues and planning to meet residents’ needs throughout the shift.
- Assist residents with morning, afternoon, and daily care to ensure they are clean, dry, toileted, continent, well-groomed, and treated with privacy and dignity.
- Assist residents with meals, toileting, hand washing, and preparation for dining; provide restorative eating as indicated.
- Assist in dining areas, offer substitutions as needed, and promote an atmosphere conducive to adequate nutritional intake.
- Help residents who cannot go to the dining room with meal service; follow infection control policies for transporting used trays.
- Assist residents in planning activities and time to support their well-being; respond promptly to call lights and provide assistance as indicated.
- Encourage participation in recreational activities and ensure fresh water and fluids are available at all times.
- Follow bath and hygiene schedules, maintain personal hygiene, and ensure infection control practices are followed.
- Check residents frequently (at least every 2 hours) to ensure safety, repositioning and assisting as needed; release any restraints in accordance with care plans; monitor skin condition and report findings to Licensed Staff.
- Provide bedside care, assist with treatments as needed, and maintain equipment positioning and cleanliness.
- Keep records of intake and outputs, document on Nursing Care Records timely, and communicate pertinent information to Licensed Staff and on group assignment sheets.
- Assist with cleaning and arranging rooms and equipment, maintain a homelike atmosphere, and cooperate with other staff to prioritize resident care.
- Support orientation of new staff, maintain a safe environment, and provide handoffs and reports to Licensed Staff at shift end.
- Perform any other tasks as assigned by Licensed Staff or Nursing leadership.
