Job Summary

Director Security for Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMC Health) oversees the protection, safeguarding, and security of hospital assets, staff, patients and visitors. The Director plans, directs, and coordinates activities related to security policy, operations, training, and exercises across a WMC Health system comprising two hospitals and affiliated medical practices and offices. This role also oversees telecommunications, courier, parking, heliport, morgue operations, regulatory compliance, budget, and security technology systems management. The position requires investigative acumen, project management, and multi-disciplinary committee engagement. The Director develops and maintains liaison with outside agencies to protect the organization and facilitate cooperation across campuses.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and directs security staff scheduling to ensure comprehensive security coverage across the system.
  • Recruits, selects, orients, and trains security professionals.
  • Adjudicates disciplinary issues, directs scheduling, controls overtime and ensures personnel quality.
  • In collaboration with the Network Director of Security Technology, directs design, implementation and maintenance of access control systems and protocols throughout the system, including credentialing.
  • In collaboration with the Network Director of Security Technology, directs design, implementation, and maintenance of surveillance and other security technology systems throughout the system.
  • Continuously develops strategic and tactical improvements through educational opportunities, personal networks, professional organizations, and liaisons with law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Responsible for the gathering, analysis and reporting of key data, metrics and other relevant security indicators.
  • Maintains record-keeping systems for the security department.
  • Continuously reviews and analyzes safety and security programs and proposes necessary improvements and innovations.
  • Chairs the HAHV Workplace Violence Reduction Multidisciplinary Team and leads monthly meetings to review WPV data and notable incidents.
  • Monitors and conducts investigations in conjunction with Legal, Human Resources, Risk Management, Quality Assurance, Clinical and Executive Management, as well as external law enforcement or other agencies, as necessary.
  • Directs investigations to mitigate theft and provide loss prevention.
  • Collates metric data to assess, analyze, and address potential loss trends.
  • Provides development of and training in educational modules, including Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations, Workplace Violence, Code Response and other security-related topics.
  • Develops and promotes necessary change in policies to conform to current best practices.
  • Continuously monitors healthcare risks and trends in order to address policy.
  • Participates in the Environment of Care Committee to report on and address issues of safety and security in a multidisciplinary group to ensure compliance with CMS, NYS DOH, Joint Commission and DNV standards.
  • Participates in the Emergency Management Committee to ensure crisis management, business continuity, and recovery in the wake of emergency crises impacting the component institutions.
  • Develops, conducts and documents joint exercises with law enforcement and other first responders to improve emergency response (e.g., active shooter and other workplace violence scenarios).
  • Meets system security department financial objectives by forecasting needs, preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, monitoring variances, and initiating corrective actions.
  • Works closely with Information Technology and other stakeholders to ensure the integrity of the system network and reliable operation of security technology systems.
  • Provides necessary risk assessments, audits and reports on access to risk-prone areas.
  • Promotes the mission of HAHV and WMC Health and ensures security department engagement with quality client and customer service.
  • On-call 24/7 for emergency situations.
  • The Director of Security reports to the WMCHealth Chief Security Officer with day-to-day reporting to the HAHV Vice President of Operations.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Experience: 7+ years of safety and security experience for a public law enforcement agency or private security company, required.
  • Education: Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Special Requirements: Security Directors who are retired Law Enforcement Officers with proper NYS Pistol Permit status may be asked to be armed while on duty according to WMCHealth Armed Security Provisions and Policy.
