Job Summary
Phlebotomist I performs daily phlebotomy activities in the PSC or IOP accurately and on time. The person in this position interacts with the client, patients, and other PathGroup personnel in a professional and courteous manner and performs both forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Greets customers appropriately and treats all customers in a courteous manner.
- Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
- Collects specimens according to established procedures. Explains the venipuncture process clearly and courteously. Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment before, during and after collection.
- Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies. Disposes of contaminated sharps per applicable laws, standards, and policies.
- Completes requisitions accurately.
- Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer. Maintains high accuracy and communicates with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify tests ordered, and obtain accurate billing information (e.g., diagnosis codes, UPIN).
- Researches test/client information using lab computer systems.
- Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test orders.
- Packages specimens for transport. Stores specimens according to required temperature, labels appropriately, and follows protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Maintains required records and documentation, daily PSC/IOP phlebotomy logs, and assists with monthly statistics and data.
- Performs basic clerical duties (filing, faxing, mail) and electronic data entry.
- Approves time and attendance in software by noon on the Monday following the pay period end. Submits accurate expense and travel logs as directed.
- Demonstrates organizational commitment and adheres to grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies.
- Maintains effective time management and handles fluctuating patient flow; communicates with co-workers and clients to promote a professional work environment.
- Answers the telephone in a helpful and professional manner, including company name and self-identification.
- Performs duties independently and communicates pertinent issues to supervisor or group leader for resolution.
- Contributes to a positive work climate and team effort; ensures facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair; reports maintenance needs as they arise.
- Assists with periodic inventory counts and reports shortages or problems.
- Uses proper PPE to protect patient and personal safety and follows all laboratory safety precautions and procedures from the manuals.
- Performs duties in alignment with industry security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information and other sensitive data.
- Familiar with and abides by Corporate Compliance Program and Corporate policies, including Privacy and Security policies.
