City of Lompoc is hiring: Heavy Equipment Operator - Landfill in Lompoc

Overview

The Heavy Equipment Operator at the City of Lompoc operates and services heavy equipment and performs related labor at the landfill. Duties vary by assignment and may include maintenance, traffic control, and related tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment used in the operation of the sanitary landfill
• Direct and operate the sprinkler truck to control dust and assist with dust suppression, compaction of travel ways and ditches
• Inspect loads, collect fees, issue receipts, maintain records, and perform minor maintenance on motorized equipment
• Cut and move cover soil
• Clear land for expanding landfill sites
• Assist in installing and removing trash fences
• Assist in removing trash and litter from fences, travel ways, or other areas of the site
• Assist in controlling traffic in and out of the site
• Use heavy equipment to spread and bury refuse
• Identify and report the need for major mechanical repairs
• May direct the work of assigned helpers

Qualifications

• License Required: Possession of a valid California driver’s license for the equipment operated
• Education/Experience: Three years of experience in public works maintenance and construction, including sufficient experience operating heavy equipment to demonstrate proficiency
• Knowledge Of: Simple record keeping; methods, materials, and tools used in public works/landfill maintenance and construction; safety precautions; California Vehicle Code provisions; mechanical operation of gasoline and diesel equipment
• Ability To: Safely operate heavy-duty equipment; perform minor field repairs; train and direct helpers; read simple plans and specifications; maintain simple records; manage traffic; follow instructions; work with the public; operate under time pressure
• Read and interpret simple construction plans; pioneer slopes may be required

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Physical: Heavy strength; ability to exert heavy force occasionally and moderate force frequently; ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, and reach
• Vision/Hearing: Visual acuity and hearing appropriate for job functions
• Environmental: Outdoor work in all weather; exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, noises; occasional exposure to chemicals, solvents, and slippery surfaces

Special Requirements

• May require respirator use; compliance with safety regulations; beard/mustache/facial hair policies for respirator seal
