Job Details

Note: Candidates selected for positions at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation will be required to complete a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and physical abilities test before beginning employment.

Typical Functions / Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repairs failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
  • Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
  • Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.
  • Removes debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items and other obstacles.

Level Descriptor

  • Level I: Basic level where incumbents work under close supervision operating and maintaining power equipment and performing related unskilled and semiskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of highways.
  • Level II: Career level where incumbents perform skilled work at the full performance level in operating heavy equipment and perform routine highway maintenance duties.

Education and Experience

  • Level I: No formal education or experience requirements.
  • Level II: One year of experience in operating heavy equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of power equipment or heavy machinery. Ability to perform manual labor, maintain and operate power equipment, and follow instructions.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of employment.
  • Some agencies may require a valid Oklahoma commercial driver's license (class A or B) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Must possess or obtain a commercial driver's license, class A, no later than five months from the date of appointment.
  • ODOT employees are required to have a CDL tank vehicle endorsement.
  • Applicants must take and pass drug test prior to appointment (as per 49 CFR parts 40 and 382).
  • Willingness to travel as needed; ability to work hours other than regular shifts during emergencies; telephone in residence for on-call duty messages.
  • Physical activities include standing, walking, reaching, lifting up to 80 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally; various vision requirements.
  • Positions may be safety sensitive as defined by state regulations.

    • Level I: $40,600
    • Level II: $47,100
