Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of the RWU Center for Economic and Environmental Development, and under the direct supervision of the Director of the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory, the Histology Lab Technician and Operations Manager is responsible for management and coordination of the Histology lab.

Program Management

Manage day-to-day histology work, including scheduling and coordination of specimen drop off in the lab; specimen labeling; dissection; decalcification and fixation; processing; embedding; and preparation of slides, including mounting and staining, quality control of samples and process; scanning and slide reading.

Prepare reports of data collected, provide follow-up on cases that need reprocessing.

Maintain a well-organized and dated records of clients, case numbers, samples, blocks and slides.

Maintain inventory and coordinate ordering of Histology laboratory supplies.

Schedule and coordinate general maintenance requirements for equipment.

Verify that all equipment is functioning properly, and establish and carry out a daily monitoring and check of equipment and supplies.

Keep the lab organized and clean.

Manage Student Workforce

Create, maintain, and enforce the student workforce schedule to ensure students get full training and contribute to specimen processing.

Train students on daily tasks and monitor their work, ensuring that tasks are successfully completed.

Confirm compliance with standard operating procedures, answer student questions, and correct any mistakes that may have been made.

Coordinate the development of all students and content with the ADL director and follow up on their progress.

Supervise and train students in histological practical work (students from courses, assistants and research).

Administrative Duties

Handle logistics of student and staff workforce during semesters, semester breaks and the summer months, including approval in the timekeeping system.

Organize regular staff and student meetings.

Monitor inventory and order all lab supplies.

Provide general information about the Histology Laboratory for tours and other visitors to campus.

Post lab updates on social media as appropriate; provide updates for website and other promotional materials and articles.

Manage relationships with the program's vendors and suppliers.

Maintain consumable inventory stock (purchasing) for the program.

Edit visual and written content that comes out of the histology lab, including technical writing and high-quality imaging and graphics for research posters and presentations, and for promotional material.

On-going laboratory Maintenance and Operations

Collaborate with other CEED/MNS/SSNS staff or faculty, and external collaborators, partner organizations, and other stakeholders to identify experimental opportunities and seek external funding to enhance revenue.

Maintain a safe and secure work environment.

Establish and maintain laboratory protocols for animal species dissections.

Maintain accurate and organized records.

Cover and coordinate emergency operations coverage of the RWU Histology Laboratory.

Plan and implement improvements to the lab and operations.

Additional Functions

Assist with other Center for Economic and Environmental Development (CEED) and Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory (ASL) projects and activities as requested.

This is a grant-funded position that is contingent upon the existence and availability of external funding

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in histology/ biology or related field with knowledge and a min of 5 years' experience in histology lab work.

American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Histotechnology Certification (or obtained within 6 months of hiring).

Ability to work methodically, record data and information, maintain accurate notes and summarize procedures and scientific findings in written and oral formats.

Ability to think critically and solve problems in a clinical/technical and research setting.

Excellent organizational skills to manage time to meet workload and deadline demands.

Ability to work independently while maintaining consistent and frequent communication with the director.

Ability to travel within the region.

Valid driver's license is required.

Proficiency in MS Office programs with the ability to create and analyze datasets.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent in Biology or related field, with 2-3 years of experience in histology lab work.

Supervisory experience of a team of technicians and/or students in a laboratory setting.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
