Navajo Preference Employment Act

POSITION SUMMARY

The Dental Assistant Supervisor is responsible for supervising of all TCRHCC satellite dental clinics, which includes up to seven dental operatories. The employee is responsible for the direct supervision of the dental assistants at all satellite dental clinics and performing clinical services as an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant, which includes adherence to hospital policies and Joint Commission regulations at designated satellite clinic.

Qualifications

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Must have a high school diploma or GED Must have completed a Dental Assistant Program in a full-time program of one year or greater in duration accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Accreditation, direct relation to the intra-oral procedures is required.

OR Must have completed the U.S. Army Dental Therapy Assistant Training Program; continuing education courses in expanded functions for dental assistants offered by IHS or the DHHS; and/or other training comparable to the above in private or governmental hospitals, clinics or schools that included formal classroom instruction and clinical training in the knowledge and skills required to perform intra-oral procedures. Must have completed one year of acceptable course work, preceptorship, or other formal training and/or work assignments specifically designed to equip the applicant with knowledge and skills required to perform intra-oral procedures. Certification:

Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association or obtain within three (3) months of date of hire

Experience:

Must have prior supervisory experience or have served in the capacity of a supervisor

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. If a new graduate, there must be positive references from teachers and supervisors from the dental hygiene program attended. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

Positive working relationships with others Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences or tardiness. The incumbent must also be proficient in the use of ultrasonic cleaning instruments (ie. piezon, cavitron) and be willing to use them as a primary means of calculus removal. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:

Position requires long periods of standing, walking, sitting, lifting, and bending as well as intermittent reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs. for a prolonged period of time and occasionally up to 25 lbs. of equipment. Must be able to hear alarms on equipment, client calls and instructions from physician/department staff. The job requires the following vision requirements: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must have ability of repetitive use of both feet and both hands, fine dexterity of both hands, as well as grasping simple/light of both hands and occasionally grasping firm/heavy of both hands.

Mental:

Performs a number of clinical support activities including chairside assistance and radiographic work, which involves a variety of sequential steps and processes. In each case, the category of the particular task and consideration of readily verified factors determine what steps are to be taken.

Environmental:

Works in a well-lit clinical setting with strict infection control standards. Must wear gloves, masks, eyewear, and protective clothing to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases. Work involves danger of exposure to radiation, fumes or airborne participles, toxic or caustic chemicals and communicable diseases. Incumbent uses lead shields to protect against radiation and wears face masks and gloves during treatment procedures. The typical noise level for the work environment is moderate noise.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Restores teeth prepared by dentist with permanent and temporary fillings Places Rubber Dam isolation for endodontic and operative procedures Takes preliminary impressions for study models, modifying impression tray as needed. Retracts gingiva from tooth for final impression by placing and removing retraction cord. Assists in surgical treatment by applying and removing periodontal and post-extraction dressings and removing sutures. Instruct patients in Oral Health Instructions (OHI): preventive dental care measures, general nutrition as related to dental health, the common causes of tooth decay, and the care of prosthodontic appliances. Applies desensitizing agents, tissue conditioner and other topical agents prescribed by dentist to specified areas of the oral cavity. Operates dental x-ray equipment to take intra and extra oral radiographs. Knowledge of and ability to recognize common dental disorders and conditions such as tooth decay and inflamed tissue. Knowledge of dental instruments and techniques in completing the more complex intra-oral procedures such as constructing and placing temporary crown and bridges and restoring grossly destroyed teeth. Performs dental cleanings using ultrasonic cleaning devices. Basic Computer Skills for completing any necessary administrative tasks. Must be able & willing to work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) program; employee will receive training with EDR. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and review courses Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role Ensure Proper PPE is used at all times while on duty. Face surgical mask is to be worn in all hospital areas. Proper handwashing is required. If water is not available use hand sanitizer. Social distancing will be practiced by department. Proper PPE is used inside assigned Clinics or Units. NIOSH- approved N95 Masks filtering face piece respirator or higher, if available, this includes eye or face shields, gloves, and isolation gowns. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. Complete provided training. Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates) Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction. Perform other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGERIAL FUNCTIONS:

Supervises all Dental Assistants at Tuba City Dental Clinic and the Lead Dental Assistants at satellite dental clinics. Assigns duties as appropriate to dental staff. Reviews and evaluates work of subordinates. Performs annual performance evaluations for all supervised staff and 90-day evaluations for new hires. Gives advice, counsel, and instruction to subordinates. Recommends appointment, promotions, and reassignments. Resolves complaints and refers grievances to higher level when necessary. Effects minor disciplinary measures and recommends action in more serious cases. Identifies training and developmental needs of subordinates and make provisions for same. Holds regular meetings with subordinates for good communication. Uses such time to keep employees informed about current management policies, performance awards/evaluations, and other personnel actions. Oversees HPDP activities or designee that coordinates HPDP activities. Responsible for ordering supplies or oversees designee that orders such supplies.
