The Role

Welds metal parts together to fabricate products using the submerged arc welding process.

Responsibilities

• Position header at machine clamping using an overhead or jib crane; align electrode on welding head over the weld joint.
• Load reel of electrode wire onto machine and thread electrode wire from reel through feed rolls and welding head; adjust welding head to set the specified angle of electrode.
• Fill hopper with specified flux and direct nozzle or gravity feed over weld line.
• Set current, voltage, and slope; synchronize wire and flux feed with welding action.
• Observe meters and gauges and monitor weld action for procedure compliance.
• Visually examine welds for adherence to specifications; grind welded surfaces as needed.
• Operate pneumatic and electric grinders.
• Use levels as required.
• Adjust machine setup to vary bead size, location, and penetration; lay out, fit, and tack work pieces.
• Preheat work piece with hand torch or heating furnace; remove surplus slag, flux, and spatter.
• Remove metal with carbon arc gouger to make repairs if necessary.
• Maintain production records of parts and jobs fabricated as required by the Department Manager.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality; ability to work on-site and overtime as needed.
• Work cooperatively with others and communicate respectfully with the public, customers, vendors, other employees, managers, and executive management.
• Perform multiple tasks concurrently in a fast-paced environment and adapt to different tasks within the department.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must pass American Society of Mechanical Engineering 1g Saw Plate Test.
