BWXT is the sole manufacturer of naval nuclear reactors for U.S. submarines and aircraft carriers. Our Mount Vernon facility houses a 100-acre site with 600,000 square feet of shop space, a 1,000-ton lift capacity, and advanced welding and heat-treating equipment to produce components for naval reactors.
What you'll do
Perform a variety of technical and specialty welding operations after completing a qualification process. Work may involve manual, automatic, and robotic equipment. Maintain weld quality and documentation to meet or exceed commercial nuclear requirements, following prescribed quality control procedures. Proficiency in SMAW (stick) welding is required; experience with pipe welding using GTAW (TIG) is also desired. Additional experience with dissimilar metal welding, NDE-prepped welds, welding in difficult positions, and heat-treat practices are a plus.
Primary duties include:
- Identify and perform basic layouts to determine clad limit lines, weld size, spacing, etc.
- Set up, align, and level the job; move equipment and components to and from the workstation.
- Attach preheat torches and maintain proper preheat temperatures.
- Set up and tear down scaffolding when necessary.
- Install and remove mechanical round-out rings.
- Use appropriate welding wire and flux for the job.
- Provide weld quality compatible with commercial nuclear requirements.
- Grind and arc-air to remove defects; finish welds per drawings.
- Use weld gauges as required; adjust welding machine settings (wire feed, electrode placement) as needed.
- Maintain a clean, orderly work area; perform minor maintenance on welding equipment as required.
- Verify material characteristics and maintain necessary records; work from written or verbal instructions; perform other duties as assigned.
- This is a full-time fabrication position.
What we need from you
Welders hired for this position will have varying duties across the build lifecycle, including fit-ups, layouts, NDE prep, grinding, rigging, and cleaning. A certification process lasting several months is required before performing an initial production weld. Work involves low-volume, high-engineering, large-scale products and must meet all customer, code, and quality control requirements; comply with all company procedures and policies. The role is physically demanding and requires:
- Welding at extreme temperatures
- Welding from platforms, lifts, ladders, and heights above 30 feet
- Ability to enter confined spaces
- Ability to weld in various positions, including laying on the stomach
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of prescribed proficiency tests. A minimum of 1-2 years of on-the-job experience is expected. A U.S. citizenship with no dual citizenship is required due to work with the federal government.
Please note: This position may involve back shift work (4:00 PM to 4:00 AM) and/or weekend shift work. Shift premiums are provided for off-shift work. The successful candidate must be willing and able to work any shift.
Benefits and compensation

The pay range for this position at the start of employment in Indiana is $62,752.20 per year, with total compensation potentially including bonuses and other benefits based on factors such as knowledge, skills, experience, and performance. Offers include details of participation in benefit plans and employment is at-will unless covered by a collective bargaining agreement. BWXT reserves the right to modify compensation and benefits at any time.
