Description
This position provides both technical and teaching support in the laboratory sciences, specifically to support the Chemistry Faculty. The person in this position must become familiar with basic lab experiments and with lab equipment. Responsible for maintaining equipment in good working order and maintaining records of chemical inventory. Coordinates with Environmental Health and Safety on research compliance with local, state, and federal fire laws and building codes. Examples of Duties
A. Academic Administration: Teaching Support: Instructional support of students in Chemistry lab sciences. This includes assisting in planning, presenting laboratory lectures, preparation, and instruction of experiments; lab demonstrations and set up; and training and supervision of student assistants. This also includes helping to design and select experiments to perform and to test as well as develop and modify experiments for course inclusion. Coordinate with faculty to purchase supplies and equipment and inventory management of these items. Participates in course design, supervises students during the lab, performs lab notebook evaluations, and writes the final evaluations.
B. General Administration: Supervises the chemical storage facilities, maintains records of chemical inventory, coordinates with Environmental Health and Safety for disposal of toxic and hazardous waste as well as issues of "Right to Know"; maintains records of hazardous waste disposal; and coordinates with the Division Chair and Environmental Health and Safety to Comply with Homeland Security requirements. Assist in the maintenance and repair of major equipment including NMR, HPLC and similar items. The person may act as the liaison between technical support and faculty. May also initiate repair requests on campus. Balances, pH meters, hot plate/stirrers, spectrophotometers, and other common laboratory equipment will be used regularly. Should be able to work with staff to maintain and instruct on advanced lab equipment such as FTIR, NMR, HPLC, and GCMS. Must be able to effect simple equipment repairs and to converse with off site technicians as needed. Assist students in use of computers in support of laboratories including some assistance with testing equipment interfacing with computers. Supports faculty members in Chemistry in course instruction by giving lectures/demonstration on use of lab equipment. Perform allied duties as requested by faculty or Division Chair. Work with Division Chair to coordinate support and safety activities with other support staff. Coordinate with Environmental Health and Safety for student training and with other Associate In Natural Sciences for small equipment repairs and maintenance of safety showers and eyewashes. Coordinates with Director of Environmental Health and Safety for student training and to ensure labs are in Compliance with local, state and federal laws and building codes Will supervise student assistants and OPS workers at times. Assist in developing budgets for lab needs, recommends purchase of equipment and supplies; maintains inventories. Associate in Natural Sciences division ensures confidentiality of records in accordance with federal and state laws and with College BOT rules and regulations. Maintains library of technical reference materials including local MSDS library and service manuals for major equipment. Performs other office related duties as needed. General instructions and assignments are given by Chemistry faculty and the Division Chair, typically outlining scope of duties and overall Assignments for the semester. Generally works independently. Verbal instructions are provided as needed. Faculty will typically send information to Chair for adjustments to work schedule. Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited institution in appropriate area of specialization and three years of related professional experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and five years related professional experience. Degree equivalency clause: Four years of director experience for a bachelor's degree in accordance with Senate Bill 1310.
