Overview
Under direction, the purpose of the position is to perform highly responsible custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. Employees in this class are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of custodial tasks that provide school personnel, students, and the public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to work and conduct school activities. Responsibility areas include, but are not necessarily limited to daily unlocking and securing of facilities, routine inspection of facilities and grounds for hazardous conditions, and assuming crew leader duties when directed. Performs related work as directed.
Examples Of Essential Functions
- Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
- Performs daily opening and securing of assigned school facility (opening gates, unlocking administration and classroom doors, inspecting grounds and facilities for hazards, turning on light systems).
- Uses electrical cleaning equipment in the cleaning of the assigned facility during hours assigned (vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high speed buffers).
- Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and established State Department of Education regulatory to ensure safety.
- Performs custodial tasks (emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; washing windows; dusting furniture; cleaning vents, fans, walls).
- Performs sanitizing tasks in restrooms, kitchen and food areas, cafeterias.
- Performs physically demanding tasks using heavy custodial equipment (mopping, stripping, waxing, floor buffing).
- Responds to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent hazardous conditions (spills, broken windows, broken locks).
- Moves furniture and other equipment as needed; cleans equipment and tools after use; maintains storage area cleanliness.
- Reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to immediate supervisor.
- Performs routine maintenance on custodial equipment (changing belts and bags, changing pad).
- Performs non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance (changing light bulbs, refilling paper/soap, setting up for meetings).
- Functions independently or as part of a custodial crew depending on the task (seasonal projects, major custodial work).
- Performs lead custodian duties when applicable (planning and coordinating tasks, training custodians in chemical use, ordering materials).
- May assume duties of Custodial Crew Leader in absence or as directed.
- Keeps up to date on current technology used by OCPS; attends trainings sponsored by the district as needed.
- Maintains timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Minimum Training And Experience
- High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Demonstrated ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the work.
- Must obtain Custodian certification issued from the Florida School Plant Management Association (FSPMA) within one year of obtaining this position. OCPS offers training classes sponsored by FSPMA for this certification.
- Effective March 19, 2007, new hires must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); incumbents with no break in service are not required to have this screening.

- Functional Reasoning: Ability to follow instructions and perform semi-routine work with some independent judgment.
- Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in predefined duties with change.
ADA Compliance
- Physical Ability: Ability to exert heavy physical effort (20-50 pounds, up to 100 pounds occasionally); capability for climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive odors, depths, and have adequate vision and communication abilities as required.
- Environmental Factors: Regular exposure to conditions such as odors, fumes, dust, humidity, machinery, noise, and other environmental factors.
