Position Custodian

Overview

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. Employees in this class are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of custodial tasks that provide school personnel, students, and the public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to work and conduct school activities. Performs related work as directed.

Examples Of Essential Functions

  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Uses electrical cleaning equipment in the cleaning of the assigned facility during hours assigned, e.g., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high speed buffers.
  • Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and established State Department of Education regulatory to ensure personal, student, public, and staff safety.
  • Ensures assigned areas are properly opened daily, and fully secured upon completion of daily tasks, e.g., locking doors and windows, turning off electrical units.
  • Performs custodial tasks such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; washing windows; dusting furniture; cleaning vents, fans, walls.
  • Performs sanitizing tasks in various facility areas, e.g., restrooms, kitchen and food areas, cafeterias.
  • Performs physically demanding tasks requiring use of heavy custodial equipment, e.g., mopping, stripping, waxing, floor buffing.
  • Responds to emergency situations to confine, resolve or prevent injurious or hazardous conditions, e.g., spills, broken windows, broken locks.
  • Moves furniture and other equipment as part of duties.
  • Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to immediate supervisor.
  • Performs routine maintenance on facility custodial equipment, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, and changing buffer machine pads.
  • Performs non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance, e.g., changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, assisting in setting up for meetings/conferences.
  • Functions independently or as part of a custodial crew depending on the task, such as in seasonal facility preparations or other major custodial projects.
  • Keeps up to date on current technology used by OCPS and attends training as required to perform in the current position.
  • Maintains timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.

Minimum Training And Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by any previous experience demonstrating ability to safely and effectively operate standard facility custodial equipment and fulfill physical requirements; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Note

  • Effective January 2017 to December 2019, there has been a temporary stay on the IPCS assessment for this position. Effective March 19, 2007, all new hires to this position must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); previous incumbents holding this position without a break in service are not required to have this screening.

  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization Requires the ability to operate and control electrically powered custodial equipment and hand-held cleaning tools.
  • Verbal Aptitude Requires the ability to utilize reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
  • Mathematical Aptitude Requires the ability to perform basic arithmetic.
  • Functional Reasoning Requires ability to carry out instructions and perform semi-routine work with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Situational Reasoning Requires judgment, decisiveness and creativity in pre-defined, frequently changing duties.

ADA COMPLIANCE

  • Physical Ability Tasks involve heavy physical effort, with climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling of objects (20-50 pounds; up to 100 pounds occasionally).
  • Sensory Requirements Some tasks require odor perception and depth perception; most require visual perception and discrimination.
  • Environmental Factors Exposure to odors, fumes, dusts, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, and other conditions.
