Responsibilities

  • The Custodian II performs moderately complex (journey-level) custodial work, including cleaning, dusting, disinfecting, and sanitizing to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
  • Operates floor maintenance equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums, and extractors. Replaces supplies as necessary.
  • Assists in inspections of buildings and equipment for cleanliness and needed repairs. Assists in performing minor building and equipment repairs and installations.
  • Maintains assigned custodial equipment in good working order. Maintains outside areas around the hospital, clears trash and debris.
  • Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including participating in disaster response and COOP activation, may require alternate shift pattern or location.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

  • Attends work regularly and may be required to work a specific shift, rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime per agency policy.
  • Performs custodial tasks timely and with high quality: sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning windows and light fixtures; ensures proper sanitization and disinfection per training.
  • Cleans and maintains floors, restrooms, nurses’ station, and other areas per procedures and safety measures.
  • Maintains and cleans interior and exterior of assigned buildings; empties trash; reports needed repairs; replenishes supplies.
  • Coaches other custodians as needed.
  • Inspects assigned buildings and areas for cleanliness, completed work, and needed minor repairs; performs minor maintenance.
  • Completes documentation accurately and timely; protects confidential information; maintains inventory and equipment records.
  • Helps patients maintain optimal health and provides a safe environment for self, persons served, and others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and methods
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods
  • Skills in the use of custodial equipment, materials, and safe handling of chemicals
  • Skills in the use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment
  • Ability to stay on task and complete work timely
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods
  • Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and patients
  • Ability to work irregular hours

Qualifications

  • Initial Screening Criteria: Six months work experience required. Experience in custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel or other similar residential equivalent preferred.
  • Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications: None

Additional Information

  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, LEIE. Males 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime or extended hours possible.
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. Immunization may be required for certain diseases; if not immunized, protective measures may be required.
