The Oakland Public Works Academy Trainee program is designed for people ages 18 to 30 who live in Oakland to gain work experience and learn job skills. The program focuses on training people to work as Park Attendants, Office Assistants, and Custodians, with the goal of building a strong group of young workers interested in a career with the City of Oakland’s Public Works Department.

What we are looking for

  • Knowledgeable about health and safety rules, cleaning methods, and how to use cleaning tools and equipment properly.
  • Timely, reliable, dependable, consistent, and thorough in their work.
  • A team player who is self-motivated and can work independently but is also willing to collaborate on shared tasks and projects.
  • Willing to share their knowledge in a positive way to help improve team morale and productivity.
  • Able to multi-task and complete duties like cleaning and disinfecting offices, bathrooms, and kitchens; stripping and waxing floors; and handling trash and recycling.
  • Flexible and able to shift priorities when urgent tasks arise.
  • An active listener who can follow directions both spoken and written.
  • Able to communicate respectfully and clearly with peers, supervisors, officials, and customers.
  • Adaptable to change and eager to learn, always looking for better ways to do custodial work effectively and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Stocking restrooms and restocking supplies in common areas.
  • Cleaning inside and outside City buildings, including areas with illegal dumping.
  • Dumping trash.
  • Stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.
  • Performing physical work safely, including lifting and other hands-on tasks.
  • Providing friendly and respectful customer service to the public and City staff.
  • Completing other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Prior custodial or cleaning experience or related training; knowledge of health and safety rules and how to use cleaning tools; ability to follow instructions; ability to work well alone or with a team; stay organized and flexible; communicate clearly and respectfully.
