Position Summary:

The House Supervisor provides support to all hospital departments during night shift, with special expertise in managing patient flow and overseeing hospital operations. In the absence of department managers, this role supervises hospital-wide operations and appropriately escalates emergencies to the Administrator on Call (AOC) in accordance with policy.

The House Supervisor is accountable for oversight of the scheduled shift as the on-site representative for hospital administration. Will carry a phone/MEDX to be easily accessible by staff and administration. Will round on all patient care and staffed areas on shift.

The House Supervisor must demonstrate the ability to make independent, evidence-based decisions supported by hospital policies and procedures. This RN should be knowledgeable about regulatory guidelines relevant to nursing care, and familiar with aspects of Acute Medical inpatients, Observation patients, and Swing Bed patients.

Job Duties:

Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills. Resolving staff, patient, or family concerns, or escalating as appropriate to pertinent leadership per administrative guidelines. This position coordinates and advocates for admissions to SVH. This employee will be responsible for carrying out the Census Management policy. Collaborates with Medical Unit charge nurse and ED RN/tech to ensure staff are provided break coverage. Adheres to SVH policies and procedures. Phone triages any calls coming into the on call provider line and provider clinically appropriate patient guidance or escalation to on call provider/specialist Monitors insufficient staffing related to sick calls, increased acuity and/or patient volume and facilitates staff outreach when needed. Support in this area includes: o Filling in for staffing needs in ED/Medical Unit Charge RN role as needed.

o Collaborating with the Medical Unit charge RN to trouble shoot patient assignments

o Performing staffing outreach to fill open staffing needs or delegating this task to address any sudden changes in staffing.

Strong clinical skills. Able to function as a team member as well as leader to ensure quality care for patients. Appropriately cross-trained to Emergency and Medical Departments with a solid understanding of patient flow and Medical Telemetry nursing practice. Ability to triage and provide initial care for patients in the ED with the ability to handoff quickly to tend to other aspects noted in this job description. Responds to all clinical codes, including code gray, and acts as the team leader in these events until appropriate hand-off can take place. Responsible for facilitating and documenting all code debriefs. Coordinates with patient care unit leaders or representatives regarding patient transfers to higher level of care. Assists with auditing and surveillance duties as assigned. Functions as the Incident Commander with any Fire, Life, or Safety issue until an administrator is onsite. Identifies internal triage events and responds per policy. Communicates with ancillary and support departments regarding patient conditions, department needs, and or concerns such as equipment downtime. Responsible for filing reports as designated. Takes part in just-in-time training for employees, new-graduate level staff, and agency staff. Provides just-in-time training with new equipment. Assists with high-risk low-volume skill sets as needed, such as ABGs, chest tubes, etc. Provides a daily hand-off to the AOC at the end of the shift. Education/Qualifications:

A Registered Nurse with at least 4 years of experience. Recent Emergency Department experience required Current ALS, PALS, TNCC, and NIHSS certifications, De-escalation training (obtain within first 90 days if not current) Collaboration skills are a priority and the ability to be flexible Previous Leadership/Nursing supervisor/Nurse Educator experience preferred Strong Computer skills Strong critical thinking skills Phone skills Communication skills Organizational skills Key Competencies:

Collaboration, Leadership, Advanced nursing skill of ED or ICU is required

Additional Skills:

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. The ideal candidate for this role is flexible, able to provide break coverage in any nursing department, maintains a positive and professional demeanor, and excels in fostering team collaboration. The House Supervisor reports to the Emergency Department Manager with a matrix reporting to the Chief Nursing Executive.

Physical Demands: Lifting ability of up to 25 lbs. with proper technique. Lifting and positioning of patients. Transferring of patients that are at a high risk of falling. Working with people that are frustrated or depressed due to their lack of functional ability or other issues. Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently. Ability to problem solve, requiring quick decision making and physical response.
