Supervisory Organization (Department): Clerc Center Bus Monitor
Summary: Reporting the Transportation Manager, the Bus Monitor assists school bus drivers daily to provide safe pupil transportation of KDES and MSSD students commuting in Gallaudet University school buses and safeguard students at all times.
Job Description: Practices safe curbside loading and unloading of all children.
Assigns seats, submits daily student attendance records and issues late passes.
Operates wheelchair lift-equipped buses; knows proper wheelchair securement and child safety seat installation procedures; and ensures that all students' seat belts are secured at all times while on the school bus.
Assists school bus drivers in daily pre and post trip vehicle inspection; and maintains the interior cleanliness of the school bus.
Assists drivers in preparing for and performing emergency evacuations of the school bus; and prepares students for emergency bus evacuation drills.
Monitors the behavior of students on the school bus; prepares Incident Reports and utilizes behavior management practices as needed; and meets with supervisors and KDES personnel as required.
Learns about assigned bus routes within fifteen (15) working days; and maintain route directions on the school bus, making changes as necessary.
Develops and fosters a positive relationship with parents, children and KDES personnel.
Attends all mandatory Driver/Monitor Safety Training.
Maintains CPR and First Aid Certification in current status.
Wears the uniform designated for Bus Monitors and provided by the University; wears a safety vest issued by the Transportation Department at all times while on duty.
Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.
Performs related and other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
A minimum of one year of experience working with transportation, student services, or a related field.
Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong ability to lift and secure students and equipment entering and exiting the school bus and during emergency situations.
Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
Additional Job Details:
This is a 11-month and part-time position.
The work schedule for this position is 5:45 am - 8:45 am and 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm (6 hours per day) depending on the traffic conditions.
The successful candidate must have valid authorization to work in the United States.
The successful candidate must undergo a Suitability Background Investigation.
The successful candidate must submit pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.
Other Important Information:
The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
