Director of Alternative and Special Education
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB: Responsible for leading a comprehensive system of services and programs. This includes direct supervision of the Coordinator of Itinerant and Related Services and the Coordinator of Special Education. This role also involves directly assisting the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services with all special education and alternative education programs, which includes guiding programming structures, addressing immediate staffing concerns with building administrators, and conducting thorough program and staff evaluation to ensure efficacy and compliance with education law. Furthermore, the Director will foster strong school and community relations through collaborative efforts with administrators and will serve as a vital support for regular and special education teachers, related services staff, outside professionals, districts, agencies, and state consultants.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, 12-month, tenure track, district-level administrative assignment. Competitive salary; negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Full complement of health benefits REPORTS TO : Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services
SUPERVISES: Coordinator of Related Service, Coordinator of Special Education, and associated clerical or support staff. Works with Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services to assist with school programs.
QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:
NYS Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA), School District Leader (SDL), or School Administration & Supervision (SAS). NYS Certification in Special Education or related service is required. Minimum of five years of successful leadership experience in the area of special education at District level is required. Successful record of service as a special education teacher, school psychologist, or related services provider required. Master's Degree in Education. Strong Knowledge of all elements in NYS Special Education and Law/Regs KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of internal and external resources for Special Education. Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of Alternative and Special Education. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide leadership and supervision to student services programs at Dutchess BOCES. Exercise sound judgment and appropriate discretion in the administration of professional duties. Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of laws and regulations related to the fiscal and programmatic implementation of alternative/special education programs. Oversight and management of behavior programs for alternative and special education programs. Serve as a member of the Cabinet Advisory Committee. Chair/facilitate district-level committees as requested or assigned by the Assistant, Deputy or District Superintendent. Serve on district and building-level committees as requested or assigned by the Assistant, Deputy or District Superintendent. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management team, faculty and staff, students and families, component districts, community partners, and the Board of Trustees. Serve as both a liaison and resource to component districts and community service partners when and where needed. Perform other administrative and/or supervisory duties as assigned by the Assistant, Deputy or District Superintendent. Budget creation and management in collaboration with the Business Office.
EVALUATION : The Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and/or Deputy Superintendent will evaluate the Director's performance annually.
