DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital and space planning, space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The campus comprises over 2,000 acres and more than 500 buildings totaling more than 8 million square feet. The department has operating budgets over $60 million, manages a project portfolio of approximately $990 million, and employs over 400 full-time staff.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision and direction of the Electrical Shop Supervisor, the Electrician performs maintenance, repair, and construction of campus electrical distribution systems, interior and exterior lighting circuitry, electro-mechanical equipment, and appliances.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $52.90/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

45% - Journeyman-Level Electrical Work

  • Performs journeyman-level electrician duties on all campus buildings.
  • Performs repair, and electrical construction duties, including installing electrical distribution of buildings, street and path lighting, and all associated circuits, equipment, wiring devices, with voltages up to and including 12KV, utilizing diagnostic instruments.
  • Installs breakers, lugs, new conductors, and conduit connectors in, on, or above energized busses, referencing manuals and specifications as necessary.
  • Performs circuit load calculations, voltage drop, and conduit fill calculations.
  • Performs estimates and project support, including plan review.
  • Drives a University vehicle to transport electrical materials and tools between campus work areas.

40% - General Preventive Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair of electrical motors, controls, motor control centers, building lighting systems, electrical panels, circuit breakers, and related equipment.
  • Performs troubleshooting by diagnosing electrical shorts, open circuits, and related issues using drawings, blueprints, and material lists.

10% - 12KV Preventive Maintenance

  • Performs preventive maintenance and assists in repairs of 12KV distribution systems and cogeneration systems.

5% - Safety & Inspection

  • Performs safety inspections and routine maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Attends safety and training classes and follows safety protocols.
  • Maintains daily timesheets and communicates effectively with campus community.
  • Maintains inventory of shop materials, supplies, and tools.
  • Responds to campus electrical outage callouts after hours, weekends, and holidays.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • California Dept of Industrial Relations General electrician certification or equivalent (4-5 years of experience).
  • Experience with circuit testing equipment, diagnostic instruments, infrared scanners, and electrical appliances.
  • Journeyman-level electrician qualified experience.
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot building electrical systems including lighting, power, and control systems.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code & CAL-OSHA Standards.
  • Willingness to be trained in various electrical specialties (Elevators, VFDs, generators, PV systems).
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E, IEEE, NETA, and ANSI safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, prepare blueprints and material lists, and place orders for materials.
  • Ability to bend conduit and install complete conduit systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts into daily work efforts.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Valid California driver’s license and DMV pull notice program participation.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and lift up to 100 pounds with/without accommodation.
  • Occasional evenings, weekends, overtime, and on-call work as required.

  • Vaccination policy compliance.
  • CANRA mandated reporter requirement and related signing.
