Purpose Statement

The Director of Transportation is responsible for organizing, administering, and supervising the District's student transportation system in alignment with state laws and Board of Education policies. This role ensures that students are safely transported to and from school and other locations, and is also tasked with overseeing the implementation of safety procedures, training programs, and transportation-related budgets.

Job Summary

The Director of Transportation manages all aspects of student transportation, including safety protocols, routing, scheduling, budget management, staff training, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This position works closely with other district leaders to optimize the effectiveness of the transportation system, ensuring the safe and efficient transport of over 11,000 students each day.

Essential Functions Safety Management: Approves and monitors safety procedures (e.g., bus stops, routing, scheduling) to ensure safe student transportation. Program Management: Oversees departmental activities like bus driver licensing, background checks, physicals, drug testing, and pre/post vehicle inspections. Collaboration: Works with district administrators to develop standards for bus purchases, preferred suppliers, and other transportation-related decisions. Training Development: Designs and implements an in-service training program for all transportation staff to meet state requirements and improve safety awareness. Routing & Scheduling: Utilizes transportation routing software to forecast and assign transportation services to students. Communication: Interprets and communicates transportation procedures to internal and external stakeholders. Record Keeping: Maintains accurate records on transportation-related data, including student eligibility, route mileage, traffic accidents, and special trip reports. Budget Management: Oversees a $9 million transportation budget, ensuring effective resource allocation. Personnel Management: Conducts hiring, evaluations, and other administrative functions to ensure adequate staffing and maintain workforce efficiency. Supervision: Directly supervises multiple line managers and over 200 employees, ensuring performance and compliance with regulations. Safety & Incident Management: Investigates safety issues and traffic accidents, taking action to ensure a safe environment for both students and staff. District Leadership: Participates in district leadership meetings and makes recommendations to achieve district goals. Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient departmental operations. Minimum Qualifications

Skills

Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and teams effectively. Proficient with standard office equipment and software applications. Proficient with transportation technology including routing and GPS tools. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Knowledge

Thorough understanding of pertinent laws, codes, policies, and regulations related to student transportation. Knowledge of transportation program planning, budgeting, and safety standards. Abilities

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment. Strong problem-solving and organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and stakeholders. Experience

Job-related experience within a transportation leadership role is required. Five (5) years experience in transportation supervision preferred.

Education:

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in a related field. Valid driver's license and CDL
