This position is with the Conservation Legacy Program, specifically within the Stewards Individual Placements. The site locations include the Alaska Region Office, Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, Cape Krusenstern National Monument, Kenai Fjords National Park, and Anchorage, Alaska. This position is not fully remote and is available for one individual for a term of 52 weeks, starting on 01/12/2026 and ending on 01/11/2027. The minimum service commitment is 1700 hours. Benefits include a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395.00, a living allowance of $700.00 per week, a relocation allowance of $1,100.00, and student loan forbearance and interest payments if applicable. For 52-week-long positions, healthcare and childcare coverage options are available upon opting in. The application timeline will close after receiving 60 applications or at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Sunday, 12 October, 2025, whichever occurs first. Applications submitted before this date will be preferred. The purpose of this GIS Assistant position is to assess the impacts of coastal erosion and other natural changes in Alaska's National Parks. Specific projects include: Coastal erosion changes before and after the Extratropical Typhoon Merbok in Bering Land Bridge and Cape Krusenstern National Parks. Evaluating the Red Dog Mine Road in association with caribou movements and mapping spill and restoration sites in Cape Krusenstern National Monument. Floating ice classification for harbor seal habitat evaluation in Kenai Fjords National Park and Preserve. Potentially, landslide monitoring projects in Kenai Fjords, Denali, and Wrangell-St. Elias National Parks and Preserves. The position involves processing survey-grade GPS data with aerial imagery datasets to create orthoimagery and digital surface models, and performing analysis on results. Field projects may include acquiring aerial imagery and GPS data, collecting GPS ground control locations, and assisting with terrestrial lidar scans. Key deliverables include updated coastline maps, processed aerial imagery and elevation models, SfM flights, and presentations within parks and at academic conferences. Qualifications include being a U.S. citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien, having a high school diploma or equivalency certificate, and being available for 52 weeks. Preferred qualifications include experience with GIS platforms like ArcGIS Pro, Python in a GIS environment, and mapping-grade or survey-grade GPS/GNSS. The position setting includes primarily office work in the NPS Alaska Regional Office, with some field project opportunities. Housing is not provided by the park, but Anchorage offers various housing options. A valid driver's license is required to drive a government vehicle, and a personal vehicle is recommended.
