PURPOSE This GIS Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. The NPS preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Many recent advances in technology, including enhance mapping and data collection, web-based tools, and services which allow for the sharing of knowledge with our NPS partners and the public, are making it easier and more efficient to meet our NPS mission. While the park collects and retains extensive GIS and spatial data, the organization, management, and modernization of these data are lacking. The GIS Assistant SIPs management and creation of a geodatabase and ArcGIS Online project that will help the park to learn more about its resources, move towards more efficiently managing and preserving those resources in an increasingly modernized digital era. Data and maps created will also be used to create additional educational materials for the public to further explore and understand the battlefield and its resources. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES The primary project goal of the position is to create a geodatabase for natural and cultural resources using existing data and new GPS data and a ArcGIS Online project that could be used for future project planning at Saratoga National Historical Park. This includes information on the parks natural resources such as significant features within the park and data relating to park projects. Park projects include deer monitoring, bird monitoring, forest monitoring, hazard tree work, grasslands preservation, park landscape maintenance, and more. Secondarily, would be to include in this database cultural information on archeological sites, compliance, and information as it relates to the Revolutionary War. KEYWORDS : ArcGIS, data management, natural resources, geodatabase, GPS mapping DELIVERABLES At the completion of this position, the SIP participant will have organized and created an abundant amount of park data into a usable geodatabase and an ArcGIS Online project that will lead to more efficient park management and planning. QUALIFICATIONS United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien. Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award. Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the NPS site location. The applicant must be available to participate for 20 Weeks in order to be considered and participate. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Strong organizational skills; thorough work products; knowledge and experience in ArcGIS/ArcGIS Online; upper level undergraduate or graduate student with credits hours or clear demonstrated experience with GIS. POSITION SETTING Office space is within Saratoga National Historical Park. The area is generally rural, but there is access to the city of Saratoga within a 20-minute drive of the park. VEHICLE AND DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Applicant must have a valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle. A personal vehicle is REQUIRED for this position. HOUSING Park housing is available and will be provided at no cost to the participant. Private room in three bedroom co-ed house with shared sitting area, kitchen, bathroom and laundry. Kitchen is supplied with dishes/pans. SIP participant will need to bring all personal items including toiletries, laundry detergent, pillows, and linens. Housing has wifi. EVALUATION AND REPORTING As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service. Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking. Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health.
