About the Role

Marion County is seeking an experienced leader to serve as the

Utilities Assistant Director - Operations . This role oversees the operations, maintenance, and compliance of the county's water and wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting long- and short-range planning efforts.

What You'll Do

Direct daily operations of county water and wastewater treatment facilities Supervise operations and maintenance staff, including laboratory and field personnel Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards (EPA, DEP, Water Management Districts, etc.) Plan, schedule, and coordinate projects, plant expansions, and equipment replacements Oversee purchasing quotes, specifications, operations reports, and records Assist in budget preparation, departmental goals, and strategic planning Participate in meetings with community members, regulatory agencies, and county leadership Respond to and resolve customer complaints related to utilities operations Provide excellent customer service and ensure staff adherence to policies and safety standards Qualifications

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree plus 10 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience Licenses/Certifications:

Valid Florida Commercial Class B Driver's License (required at hire) Class A Water or Wastewater Operator license from Florida DEP, plus at least a Class C license in the other field

Strong knowledge of water and wastewater treatment regulations and best practices Ability to plan and supervise large-scale utility operations across a broad region Skilled in policy development, process improvement, and operational planning Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution abilities Organizational and analytical skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency or high-stress situations

Work Environment

This role requires both office and field work. You may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, mechanical equipment, hazardous materials, and high-noise environments. On-call availability for emergencies is required.
