Volunteer with Freedom Farms

Join Freedom Farms for hands-on volunteer opportunities that directly support our local food system! Why: Currently, the food we grow goes to feed the community through donations and local community fridges. Our goal is to get our locally grown produce into grocery stores, restaurants, and corner markets to help close the gap between fresh and healthy foods in underserved communities. The plants that we grow at our nursery are given to local growers at low to no-cost to support their efforts and make urban farming more accessible. Who: PFGLA was founded in 2020 as a partnership between McCarty Memorial Christian Church and the Jewish Center for Justice, to address core needs vital to community members' quality of life, such as food access, job and economic security, primary education support, and workforce development. What to Expect: Volunteers will be asked to help in a variety of tasks including but not limited to seeding, weeding, planting, harvesting, and washing produce. All tasks are done outdoors so we ask participants to be considerate of the temperature. Please bring water and snacks for yourself and wear sunscreen and a hat when appropriate. We ask you wear comfortable clothing including long pants and closed toed shoes. Currently, we need help at two locations: a community garden in Willowbrook and Freedom Farms Nursery in South LA. What's Required: We do not require any special skills or knowledge to volunteer, just an eagerness to learn. The times of our volunteer opportunities vary, so be sure to visit our GivePulse site for the most up-to-date information.
