The Vacancy, Basic Function, Minimum Qualifications

THE VACANCY:

This recruitment will be used to fill substitute (temporary/as-needed basis) positions only.

This recruitment is open and continuous, meaning that all are welcome to apply, and applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis with examinations occurring once a sufficient number of applications have been received.

Substitute positions may have varying days and hours depending on the need. Shifts range from Day Shifts (6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.), Midday Shifts (10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.), Evening Shifts (2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.), and Part-Time Shifts (10:15 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.), and may include weekends. BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform routine day or evening custodial activities at an assigned school site; maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition; perform deep cleaning of floors as part of an assigned roving work crew as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Written examinations will be conducted virtually, using different online/internet platforms that require video recording or conferencing capabilities, as well as access to a computer with internet connection and basic Microsoft Office Suite Software. The examination process will be held on a continuous, as needed basis. This means that in-person performance examinations will be scheduled after a sufficient number of applications have been received. Qualified applicants submitting applications after the review date will be considered in the next examination process. Job Responsibilities REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned District school site during a day or evening shift; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets.

Clean classrooms, cafeterias, lounges, offices and other facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles spot mop spills; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed.

Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and windows; unclog drains and toilets.

Perform deep cleaning of floors as part of an assigned roving work crew as assigned; travel to school sites; strip, wax and pressure wash floors; perform routine maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment; conduct emergency maintenance and custodial duties and respond to broken sewer lines, security issues, deliveries, fires, alarms, furniture moving, equipment repair and other issues.

Pick up paper and other debris from school grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to school facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to school building.

Replace light bulbs and tubes, clean boards and erasers and empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs and floors after breakfast, lunch and recess periods as assigned.

Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set alarms as appropriate; raise and lower flags as assigned.

Perform a variety of routine general maintenance and repair to equipment and furniture as assigned.

Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority; respond to emergency custodial requests as needed.

Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment as assigned. Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms and multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings; set-up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment for special events and activities; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events.

Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods.

Perform minor grounds maintenance duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work. Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, blackboards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Requirements of maintaining District buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Proper lifting techniques. MSDS reporting procedures and requirements.

ABILITY TO: Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site. Maintain District buildings and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly and secure condition. Perform deep cleaning of floors as part of an assigned roving work crew as assigned. Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Operate a variety of custodial equipment. Maintain tools and equipment in clean working order. Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events. Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair. Perform minor non-technical repairs. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Observe health and safety regulations. Meet schedules and time lines.

WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor work environment. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. Driving a vehicle to conduct work as required by position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of custodial equipment. Walking or standing for extended periods of time. Seeing to perform custodial duties. Carrying, lifting, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Climbing ladders and working from heights to replace light bulbs.

HAZARDS: Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals. Working on ladders.

Employees accumulate twelve (12) days of vacation during the first year of employment, increasing up to twenty-two (22) days beginning the 18th year of service, prorated for part-time, 9, 10, and 11 month assignments. The number of paid holidays per year varies from twelve (12) to fourteen (14) days depending on the work calendar. Employees accumulate twelve (12) days of paid sick leave per year, with unlimited accumulation, prorated for part-time, 9, 10, and 11 month employees.

RETIREMENT

All employees who are in the classified service and work four (4) hours per day or more are members of the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) and Federal Social Security. If an employee in the classified service works less than four (4) hours per day they are members of an Alternate Retirement System (PARS) and do not contribute to Social Security. Approximately 7% is deducted from your paycheck for PERS retirement.

The District offers a comprehensive health benefits program for employees who work twenty (20) hours or more per week. This includes medical, vision, dental insurance plans and life insurance for employees. For full-time employees the District pays the employee's health, vision, dental, and life insurance premiums with an employee contribution required for some plans. For part-time employees plans are available on a prorated basis. Dependent coverage is available. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

The District encourages employees to pursue professional growth. Professional growth points shall be earned by employee participation while in non-paid status in activities which are employment related. Professional growth points are awarded annually and accumulate at $20 per approved Professional Growth Point and/or tuition and textbook reimbursement up to $500 is also available - limited to one per year. 01
