We are looking for a Controls Engineer based in Aliso Viejo, CA to support the electrical and software components of machinery and tooling projects, from innovative R&D initiatives to full-scale production systems. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams and working closely with customers to understand technical requirements and contribute to the development of high-performance, integrated automation solutions.
Job Responsibilities
Design, develop, and integrate custom automation software solutions, including machine vision, robotics, feedback systems, and data management tools.
Program and implement off-the-shelf components such as cameras, sensors, motors, and robots to create fully functional automated systems.
Collaborate with customers to define and refine project requirements, including functional specifications and user interface needs (e.g., HMIs, MES integration).
Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure seamless mechanical and electrical integration across projects.
Support production teams during equipment debug, commissioning, and installation, ensuring smooth deployment and performance.
Manage project timelines and budgets, proactively communicating progress and roadblocks with Project Managers.
Oversee external suppliers and vendors, ensuring alignment with project goals and quality standards.
Provide on-site support for equipment deployment and service, with occasional travel required.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering or related field
Minimum up to 1 year of experience in controls design, PLC programming, and/or industrial automation, this can include course work, projects, and internship(s)
Practical, hands-on experience acquired through a relevant internship is required
Skilled in AutoCAD or SolidWorks for wiring diagrams; familiar with HMI/GUI and PLC development environments.
Hands-on experience programming and tuning servomotors, stepper motors, and VFDs; field devices: sensors, actuators, and I/O signal processing.
Knowledge of integrating vision systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence) and robotic platforms (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, Kuka, Mitsubishi, Epson).
Knowledge of VB.NET, C, .NET, COM/ActiveX, & SDK/API implementation; understanding of communication protocols such as RS232, Ethernet/IP, & Modbus.
Proven ability to diagnose and resolve issues with automated equipment; able to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical schematics.
Comfortable working in 24/7 manufacturing environments.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, customer-focused mindset, and ability to thrive under pressure and uncertainty.
Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and presentation skills; highly organized and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Willingness to travel up to 5% outside California and up to 20% to local customer sites.
