Description: The incumbent is responsible for the gross examination and description of surgical specimens submitted to the Pathology Department. The Pathology Assistant should have a thorough knowledge and great proficiency in performing gross description and cutting techniques of surgical specimens. They must be capable of performing moderate and highly complex procedures in Surgical Pathology. The incumbent should present a pleasing and helpful manner to clients, physicians, and all hospital personnel. They should be able to communicate with physicians, pathologists, and clinicians in a knowledgeable and professional manner. This role also involves supporting and contributing to laboratory objectives by assisting fellow employees. The incumbent is responsible for compliance with relevant local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations. They must present for work in a timely manner, groomed professionally, and perform job functions in accordance with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures. Each employee is responsible for upholding values, namely: respect for every individual, delivery of quality service, constant pursuit of excellence, and commitment to integrity. The primary responsibilities include performing gross description and dissection of complex surgical specimens with clinical proficiency. The incumbent must ensure the adequacy of specimens submitted and communicate with surgery or outside clients if there are problems with any specimens. They will select and stain appropriate tissue sections for frozen sections and perform specimen photography when requested. All patient care work needs to be completed before leaving the work area, with additional needs communicated to pathologists or pathology assistants. They will assist technicians as needed in performing all duties to ensure workflow and quality patient care. These duties include computer functions as well as all charging and coding functions.
