Distinguishing Features of the Class
Join the Parking Meter Team that patrols over 4,000 meters in downtown Des Moines! This position is key to the success of many special events held in the heart of Des Moines and to assist in the management of traffic flow during peak hours.
Under general supervision, to enforce laws and regulations governing the parking of motor vehicles on public streets. Performs related work as required. This position will require working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including the heat, cold, rain, snow, ect.
Will require working some nights and weekends as assigned.
NOTE: The starting pay for this position is 23.33
Acceptable Experience and Training
Graduation from high school and two years of experience in a position involving considerable public contact; including some experience in general clerical work and using a personal computer, or
Any equivalent combination in which each year of additional education may be substituted for one year of experience.
Required Special Qualifications
Possession of a valid Iowa Driver's License, or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
Ability to pass a background check.
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
Patrols an assigned area on foot or by motor vehicle issuing citations to and/or impounding vehicles parked overtime or illegally on streets and/or private property. Answers questions from the public concerning travel directions, parking regulations and general information about the City.
Completes written reports of vehicle impoundments, stolen vehicles, and found property.
Generates overtime parking tickets by entering numerical and narrative data into a hand-held computerized ticket writer or by handwriting tickets for other types of violations.
Enters, maintains, and retrieves statistical data on impoundments, citations, and habitual violators using a personal computer; reports data to supervisor.
Reports accidents, staged cars, and criminal activity to Police Dispatch.
Assists the public by directing traffic and by making calls for towing improperly parked vehicles and/or for rescue/emergency service.
Responds to illegal parking complaints.
Processes Scofflaw violators.
Appears and testifies in municipal court and at city impound hearings regarding disputed parking violations.
Conducts parking surveys related to parking compliance and usage.
Performs special assignments such as hooding meters and receiving and delivering office supplies, department documents, and fine monies.
Performs related work as required.
