Job Purpose: Supervises the daily operations of multiple instructional science laboratories (e.g., biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology), including the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of complex laboratory instrumentation. Performs advanced technical work supporting faculty and student learning. Maintains safe, well-equipped laboratory environments and supervises subordinate technical staff.

Job Functions:

Lab Operations: Supervises the preparation, setup, and breakdown of instructional labs in the biological and chemical sciences. Operates, calibrates, maintains, and completes minor repairs on a wide range of complex scientific laboratory equipment, including spectrophotometers, centrifuges, microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, and analytical balances. Designs and fabricates or modifies laboratory tools and equipment for specialized instructional needs. Consults with faculty on laboratory curriculum support and technical needs. Maintenance and Record Keeping: Oversees chemical inventory and purchasing; maintains SDS records and documentation of lab-related regulatory compliance. Prepares and maintains laboratory records, including equipment maintenance logs, inventory databases, and instructional lab materials. Orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies. Is responsible for the general order and cleanliness of all lab spaces. Lab Protocols: Designs and updates lab procedures to align protocols, personnel roles, and equipment use with instructional goals. Develops and implements lab safety protocols and ensures compliance with OSHA, chemical hygiene, and hazardous materials disposal standards. Responsible for implementing PPE policies for faculty and students. Leadership: Instructs faculty, students, and staff in the proper use of scientific instruments and procedures. Trains and supervises lab assistants, technicians, and student workers. As Chemical Safety Officer for OSHA and the college's Chemical Hygiene Plan, responsible for OSHA and safety compliance by ensuring chemical inventory is properly stored, maintained, handled, and disposed. Chemical storage should be maintained and labeled in an orderly manner compliant with OSHA regulations. Must ensure proper handling of potentially hazardous chemicals, biological agents, and biohazards to meet safety standards to maintain a safe learning environment and workplace. Responsible for chemical and biological waste disposal according to established protocols by working with the necessary inter-divisional departments ensure compliance. Oversees the biohazardous waste disposal contract/agreement. Performs other duties as assigned by the department head. Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in a related medical or scientific discipline; or an associate degree or equivalent training in a related medical, scientific or technical discipline and journey-level work experience in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing instructional labs in a higher education setting. Certification or training in chemical hygiene, biosafety, or hazardous materials management. Experience with lab scheduling software and inventory systems. Knowledge of pedagogical support for STEM instruction.
