Basic Function

The job of Bus Driver is done for the purpose/s of providing support within the student transportation services area with specific responsibilities for transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from field trips; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.

This job reports to designated administrator.

Representative Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior as needed for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety.

Checks vehicle documentation is accurate and current (e.g. insurance card, vehicle registration, CHP Certification, accident report kit, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring information is accurate and currents and compliance with state guideline and information required by law.

Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior as needed (e.g. dusts dashboard, cleans windows, sweeps and mops, sanitizes bus, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle.

Conducts emergency evacuation drills annually at school sites for the purpose of ensuring efficiency of procedures and complying with requirements.

Drives vans and maintenance vehicles to and from shop/dealership for the purpose of supporting transportation department functions.

Drives school bus/s for the purpose of transporting students over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.

Inspects emergency equipment (e.g. fire extinguisher, first aid kit, stop sign, triangle reflector, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring quality of work standards are met and identifying preventive maintenance requirements.

Monitors students during transit for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all students and staff.

Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, brake system, lighting systems, seat belts, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines.

Prepares reports (e.g. bus inspections, field trips reports, incident reports, inspections records, passenger misconduct, student counts, routing information, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities; providing written reference; conveying information; and/or complying with established guidelines.

Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services.

Marginal Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Initial/Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from High School

OR

General Education Development (GED) equivalent. Six (6) months of experience in a job-related field. Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: California Class B commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements. California School Bus Driver Certificate. School Bus Driver Medical Certificate. First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency. Incumbents must have an acceptable driving record and must qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; maintaining order among passengers; driving safely and effectively; operating fire extinguisher, two-way radio, and standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records; oral and written communication skills.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations; safe and defensive driving practices and procedures; emergency evacuation techniques; area, streets, and locations; basic vehicle maintenance; and health standards and hazards.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups including school age riders; displaying tact and courtesy; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; exercising sound judgment; maintaining confidentiality; meeting schedule and timelines; be flexible with route changes; and working with some distractions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking, and 15% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
