Description of Work Unit

The College of Business at Colorado State University is an AACSB accredited business school which enrolls more than 2,600 undergraduate students in eleven business concentrations and approximately 1,500 graduate students across multiple graduate programs. While we are the largest undergraduate and graduate major on campus, we strive to create a small college environment.

The College of Business Career Management Center ( CMC ) provides comprehensive career services to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni, of Colorado State University's College of Business. Services include career counseling, career assessment, resource development, internship and job search assistance, hosting employer engagement and recruiting events, instruction of career development courses and groups, marketing and outreach that facilitates student and employer connection, and cultivating employer relationships that lead to successful career outcomes for students.

Position Summary

The Career Counselor is a key member of the Career Management Center team, supporting undergraduate and graduate business students, as well as alumni, in navigating their career development and job search strategies. This role blends career advising, coaching, and resource development to help students build career readiness competencies, understand labor market trends, and pursue meaningful internships and employment opportunities.

The Career Counselor engages students through individual appointments, group workshops, class presentations, and potential career courses. They work with individuals across a wide range of experience levels, ranging from those exploring career options to students preparing for internships, entering the workforce, or advancing in their careers. The Career Counselor tailors their approach to support students with varied business concentrations and professional interests, helping them build clarity, confidence, and actionable strategies for success.

As part of a collaborative and innovative team, the Career Counselor contributes to strategic initiatives, resource creation, employer engagement, and event planning. This role is ideal for career services professionals who bring a student-centered approach, strong communication skills, and the capacity to help rising professionals succeed in business careers.

The desired start date for this position is January 2026 or sooner.

Required Job Qualifications

Master's degree in career counseling, business, human resources, higher education, student affairs, or a closely related field.

Minimum of 2 years of experience in career development, such as college career services, career advising, career coaching, career counseling, employee development within an industry setting, or similar. This can include internship experience.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the Career Management Center unit will not provide visa sponsorship for this position now or in the future.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Career development certifications through NCDA , NACE , Career Thought Leaders, or other relevant credentials in career coaching, career counseling, or career advising.

Career development experience working with business students or individuals pursuing careers in business-related fields.

Academic or professional background in business, such as a degree in business or substantial industry experience.

Experience developing and delivering career-related presentations to student groups, classes, or professional audiences.

Experience facilitating and interpreting career assessment tools, such as CliftonStrengths, CareerLeader, or other relevant assessments.

Provide career advising and coaching to undergraduate, graduate, and alumni populations within the College of Business through individual appointments (45 minutes) and drop-in meetings (15 minutes), supporting students in navigating career exploration, preparation, and transitions.

Use a student-centered, strategic approach to help individuals clarify career goals, build readiness competencies, and develop actionable plans for internships, job searches, and long-term career success.

Guide students in understanding career pathways aligned with their business concentration or graduate program, incorporating industry and labor market trends to inform decision-making.

Administer and interpret career assessments such as CliftonStrengths and CareerLeader to support student self-awareness and career planning.

Assess student needs and provide appropriate referrals to internal and external resources, including academic support, mental health services, and professional development opportunities.

Collaborate on Career Management Center strategic initiatives that align with College of Business goals and priorities.

Contribute to a team-based approach in setting goals, planning events, facilitating career fairs and networking functions, refining programs, developing new resources, conducting class and group presentations, and supporting career management-related courses.

Create and curate career resource content for the Career Management Center's website (bizcareers.colostate.edu), online learning platforms, social media, email newsletters, and career guides. Topics may include career exploration in business, internship processes, targeted job searching, offer negotiation, resume and cover letter creation, interviewing, building social capital, career-relevant social media strategies, AI and the future of work, and career and life design.

Partner on Career Management Center programs such as the Mentoring Program, Professional Development Fund, and Student Career Navigators, among others.

Actively contribute to the planning and execution of high-impact events, including Career Fairs, Recruiter Resume Revisions, Career Meetups, and other student-facing initiatives.

Participate in departmental team and staff meetings, offering input and collaboration to support shared goals.

Build and maintain relationships with Career Management Center stakeholders, including employer partners, prospective employers, university career services colleagues, and internal College of Business faculty and staff.

Deliver engaging workshops and presentations on career development topics in group settings, including business classes, student clubs and organizations, and Career Management Center-hosted sessions. Content may be team-developed, adapted from existing materials, or created for specific audiences and occasions.

Facilitate sessions across a variety of formats, including in-person, video, webinars, and other relevant platforms, ensuring accessibility and relevance for diverse student needs.

Contribute to the Career Management Center's teaching of current and potential career development and readiness courses and mini-courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
