Position Summary
The Infrastructure and Systems Administrator (administrator) partners with the Senior Infrastructure and Systems Administrator (senior administrator) to manage day to day infrastructure and cloud systems operations. The administrator will primarily focus on Google Workspace for Education and Linux systems; s/he will also assist the senior administrator with Microsoft 365 and Windows systems.
Together with the senior administrator, the administrator implements the college's cloud strategy, creating tactical initiatives to help achieve the strategic goals set by CIS leadership and the Core Technology Services (CTS) team. The relatively small size of the CTS team means that the administrator must demonstrate initiative to independently plan and execute operations with minimal supervision. This role designs and maintains hosted and on-premise systems and applications. The administrator must stay abreast of developments in highly technical areas that include virtual and cloud infrastructure systems, as well as platform services such as Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace. In addition to maintaining the college's significant cloud presence, the administrator leads projects to migrate on premise systems to the cloud and identify and implement new and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) platforms. The administrator works closely with the CTS team to constantly improve the college's Identity and Access management system, upon which most other systems rely. The administrator, along with others in CIS, has significant cybersecurity responsibilities for the systems and applications they manage.
Duties and Responsibilities
General Stay up to date with emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, software as a service and platform as a service offerings across cloud systems used by the college. Participate in the initiation and completion of strategic projects, including integration with other college applications and third-party services. Play a leading role in actively reviewing, maintaining, and improving the college's cloud and cybersecurity platforms focusing on Google Workspace, Trustwave, Duo MFA and other core infrastructure systems. In collaboration with the Director and Sr Administrator, the administrator will organize daily responsibilities and delegate tasks to the CTS team. Participate fully and as an equal member in the team that handles the configuration, management, and access control for IT services that utilize software as a service offerings, including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, Duo MFA, and others. Work closely with the Research Computing Specialist to ensure that High Performance Computing Linux environments available to the HMC community are well maintained and fit for purpose. Cloud and system administration
With input from the Core Technology Services (CTS) team, independently plan and apply OS and application patches for Linux server environments to ensure that all systems are up to date and as secure. Configure and test services within Google Workspace for Education including all the core services and other features such as data loss prevention, account maintenance and context sensitive authorization. Using independent judgment based on research, make recommendations to take advantage of cloud offerings, such as moving services from virtual machines to functions as a service. Plan, implement, and maintain single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), mobile device management (MDM) and identity and access management (IAM) services for the college. Monitor critical services and, using independent judgment, take appropriate action to proactively resolve issues. Assist with day-to-day support for on/off premise services, such as troubleshooting and end-user problem resolution. Actively participate in disaster recovery planning, implementation and quality assurance. Support tasks
By attending conferences, taking classes and conducting research, keep up to date with developments in cloud computing in general and Google Workspace for Education in particular; provide recommendations to improve cloud services and operational efficiencies. Work closely within IT positions both within CIS and in academic and administrative departments (Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, OCA) to support them with local Linux systems and educate them about cloud options, assisting them with migrations as appropriate. Carry out the role of vendor liaison for Google Workspace for Education. This includes actively and independently engaging with resellers to ensure that the college is getting the highest benefit possible from cloud investments. Actively inform CIS staff and others on campus about features and functionality available from these vendors. Act as a technical contact for 3rd parties and vendors relating to cloud-based, on-premises and hybrid computing resources and solutions at the college. Cybersecurity
Actively monitor systems for security related anomalies. Ensure that security is part of the design of cloud services. Actively participate in the review of cybersecurity screening of vendors (HECVAT). Participate in the development of cybersecurity playbooks; carry out steps assigned to the administrator role in the event that a playbook is invoked. Other Responsibilities
Provide application and system support outside of usual campus hours, as needed or required. Create, maintain and audit relevant technical documentation. Attend and actively participate in team, CIS department, and other Claremont technical meetings. Escalate urgent issues via phone and email to CIS managers 24/7. Education:
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience:
Proficiency with Linux operating system in order to install, configure and secure servers. Experience in the ongoing maintenance of Linux systems, including application maintenance. Knowledge of Google Workspace administration. Some experience with Microsoft Azure platform to act in a backup capacity to the Senior Administrator. Demonstrated technical understanding and experience with systems that provide single sign-on, multi-factor authentication and identity and access management. Sufficient background knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, web servers, SQL, Active Directory and VPN to carry out the duties of the position. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment to carry out CIS strategies and meet annual goals. Ability to carry out independent research and make well reasoned recommendations. Ability to work well in a small team oriented college department where people often perform many roles at once. Ability to juggle many different demands during a typical workday without losing track of priorities. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with developing servers and implementing services within SaaS and IaaS solutions. Familiarity with user side and administration of Google Workspace. Some familiarity with user side and administration of Microsoft 365 environments. Demonstrated desire and willingness to keep up with constantly changing cloud offerings in an open minded way by reading widely, attending conferences and networking with other IT professionals. Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to develop and test hypotheses. Ability to communicate technical concepts in terms that are appropriate for the intended audience. Ability to communicate in an understandable, polite and friendly manner, both in writing and verbally with a wide range of customers, vendors and technical colleagues.
