Job Description:

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Position Summary: The Progress Specialist supports the college's student success and retention goals by identifying and proactively assisting students at risk of academic failure or disengagement, particularly those who are Pell-eligible or underserved. The position focuses on early intervention for students not progressing toward 12 earned credits or experiencing challenges in gateway English and Math courses. The Progress Specialist plays a critical role in preventing student stop-outs through personalized outreach, timely referrals, and coordination with faculty and support services.

This Progress Specialist Recruitment is to fill 2 positions; 1 Portsmouth Campus& 1 Norfolk Campus.

Functional Responsibilities: • Revise and relaunch early alert and academic progress report programs with a focus on gateway English and Math courses. • Monitor alerts and academic performance of at-risk students using EAB Navigate and institutional data systems. • Track credit accumulation and proactively engage students who are not progressing toward 12 credits. • Conduct targeted outreach via phone, text, and email to students who disengage, stop attending, or are flagged through early alert systems. • Provide proactive support to re-engage students and connect them to appropriate services. • Refer students to academic tutoring, counseling, financial aid, academic coaching, and other student services. • Serve as a liaison between students and campus resources to resolve barriers to persistence and completion. • Design and host small-group workshops focused on academic recovery, time management, college navigation, and other student success topics. • Participate in retention team meetings and institution-wide student success campaigns. • Generate and analyze retention risk reports to inform outreach strategies and improve interventions.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience in academic advising, retention, student success, or a related area. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with diverse student populations. • Knowledge of issues impacting Pell-eligible and underserved student populations. • Student-centered mindset with a proactive, solution-oriented approach. • Strong organizational and data management skills. • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments. • Commitment to student services.

Additional Considerations:

• Experience using student support platforms such as EAB Navigate, PeopleSoft, or similar. • Knowledge of issues impacting Pell-eligible and underserved student populations.
