Closing Date: Until Filled Job Title: Bus Monitor Classification: School Bus Monitor Reports To: Transportation Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY Bus Monitors assist the driver with loading, unloading and student management on the school bus. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Create a positive environment for students on the bus. 2. Ensure safety of students during boarding and exiting the bus. 3. Ensure that all child passengers are in appropriate safety restraint systems and seatbelts, if applicable. 4. Operate lift and secure wheelchairs in tie-down systems, if applicable. 5. Assist the driver in maintaining safety on the bus in route and while the bus is parked at bus stops. 6. Follow District policies regarding student control and contact with parents and the public. 7. Prepare for and assist with emergency evacuations. 8. Handle emergency situations calmly and quickly. 9. Perform first aid or emergency assistance. 10. Report problems or equipment malfunctions. 11. Report incidents that affect the safety of students. 12. Attend scheduled meetings and safety programs. 13. Complete accurate records as required by District policies and procedures. 14. Attends work regularly. 15. Occasionally perform work beyond a standard 40-hour work week when work-load requires. 16. Other duties may be assigned as needed. MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Attends staff meetings. 2. Attends in-service trainings. 3. Reports road and other hazards as necessary. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with minimum supervision. Must be able to promote positive communications within and outside the District. Must be able to relate to children of varying ages, disabilities and behaviors. Must be able to relate to adults of varying social and economic backgrounds. Requires the ability to maintain order among students, both while the bus is moving and at bus stops. Must be able to recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action. Must administer first aid to ill or injured students. Must learn designated bus route, including stops and traffic hazards. Ability to think clearly and process information effectively to solve problems and make decisions related to the work tasks and the environment associated with this position. Ability to read directions, warning information and basic correspondence at a level that permits safe and effective management of the tasks associated with this position. Physical Abilities: Frequently requires lifting and transfer of 10-50 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds. Ability to assist special needs students. Ability to maintain required records. Arm-hand and leg-foot dexterity. Visual acuity including depth perception. Ability to sit for extended periods of time. Hearing sufficient to be aware of traffic and road distractions/conditions and ability to listen to children. Ability to read and write sufficiently to perform all of the duties of the position including understanding applicable laws, regulations and codes required. Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to remain calm and professional in an environment with frequent interruptions. Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff or members of the community. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use email. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community. Ability to effectively prioritize work tasks and train others in completing work tasks. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid First Aid Card. Knowledge and Skills: Requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of safe bus practices. Requires a thorough understanding of bus operation and safety sufficient to recognize problems and take appropriate action. Must have a thorough understanding of laws, rules and regulations related to pupil transportation. Must know and understand how to apply first aid practices. Requires good communication skills. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. Specifically must have the ability to: 1. Open and close a manually operated bus entrance door control with a force of at least 30 pounds. 2. Climb and descend steps with a maximum step height of 17 ½ inches. 3. Operate two hand controls simultaneously and quickly in an emergency situation. 4. Carry or drag a 125-pound person 30 feet in 30 seconds or less. 5. Exit from an emergency door opening of 24 by 48 inches at least 42 inches from the ground in ten seconds or less. 6. Must be physically able to open all emergency exits installed in any school bus they're assigned. 7. Must have visual acuity of at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses; binocular acuity of at least 20/40 in both eyes, with or without corrective lenses; from field of vision of at least 140 degrees; the ability to distinguish the colors red, green, and yellow. 8. Must have hearing of 7/15 in at least one ear. 9. Must not have mental, nervous, organic or functional disease or disability likely to interfere with safely assisting the driver or other responsibilities of a school bus monitor. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
