Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a youth-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Role Overview
We are seeking a Deputy Director of Human Resources (Volunteer) to work alongside MAP’s Director of HR in overseeing all aspects of volunteer and staff management. This role will take on leadership responsibilities in recruitment, training, compliance, and organizational culture while serving as a thought partner to the Director.
The ideal candidate is a strategic, people-focused leader who thrives on building systems that empower diverse teams and who believes HR can drive culture and mission.
Key Responsibilities
Partner with the Director of HR to oversee HR strategy and daily operations
Lead recruitment initiatives, including job postings, candidate screening, and interviews
Oversee onboarding and training programs to ensure consistency and mission alignment
Maintain HR systems, records, and compliance with nonprofit standards
Develop policies and procedures that promote equity, inclusion, and accountability
Support volunteer engagement, retention, and recognition initiatives
Provide guidance on conflict resolution, staff support, and performance management
Supervise HR volunteers or interns, delegating tasks and ensuring quality outcomes
Report regularly to leadership on HR metrics, staffing needs, and organizational culture
Requirements
Significant experience in human resources, nonprofit administration, or volunteer management
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
Familiarity with HR systems, compliance, and labor laws (nonprofit preferred)
Strategic thinking and ability to design and implement effective processes
Commitment to mission-driven work and building equitable, supportive cultures
Preferred Skills
Background in nonprofit HR or volunteer-led organizations
Experience supervising staff or leading HR teams
Knowledge of DEI practices, nonprofit labor regulations, and HR compliance
Familiarity with HR software or management tools
