Director of Human Resources (Volunteer) Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP) Location: Remote Type: Volunteer (Unpaid) About Mentor A Promise Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, and creative expression, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive. Volunteers are the heart of our mission, and strong HR leadership is essential to supporting them. Role Overview We are seeking a Volunteer Director of Human Resources to lead MAP’s HR operations, strategy, and compliance. This role is critical in developing and managing volunteer systems, supporting recruitment and retention, and ensuring MAP maintains a welcoming, inclusive, and compliant environment. The Director of HR will guide policies, onboarding, and organizational culture to strengthen our growing team of volunteers and staff. Key Responsibilities Oversee all HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, and engagement of volunteers Develop and implement HR policies aligned with nonprofit best practices and legal requirements Maintain accurate HR records and ensure compliance with confidentiality and data standards Provide guidance on conflict resolution, performance management, and volunteer support Collaborate with leadership to strengthen MAP’s culture and retention practices Supervise and mentor HR coordinators, assistants, and other HR volunteers Support DEI initiatives and ensure HR practices reflect MAP’s mission of equity Qualifications Experience in human resources, nonprofit management, or people operations Knowledge of HR policies, procedures, and compliance standards Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills Ability to handle sensitive information with integrity and discretion Experience managing teams or mentoring staff/volunteers Commitment to equity, inclusion, and MAP’s mission Commitment Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week Minimum 6-month commitment preferred Fully remote with virtual meetings What You’ll Gain Leadership experience directing HR for a growing nonprofit Opportunities to shape organizational culture and volunteer systems Collaboration with a passionate and mission-driven leadership team Professional references and letters of recommendation The chance to leave a lasting impact on both MAP’s volunteers and the communities we serve How to Apply Please send your resume and LinkedIn profile to hr@mentorapromise.org along with a brief statement of interest.
